Liberty safes

9/6/2023 10:35:08 PM EDT
So I came across this article.  America’s top gun safe manufacturer, Liberty Safe, gave the FBI an access code to a safe owned by someone who was present at the J6 protest.

[#1]
Do you have a technical question about their safes or are you just spamming more rage bait from GD?

Because Technical Forums aren't GD.
Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror.

Technical not a question just making a statement.  Guess you own a Liberty safe 😉
9/6/2023 10:44:49 PM EDT
[#3]
I think a valid technical question is: what safes have a back door code? And under what conditions are they given out?

Any other snarky “this is not GD” comments?

The 13 page thread:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/2670727_Is-Liberty-Safe-the-new-Benchmade-.html

I would think that, like Bud Light, Liberty safe sales are about to take a serious hit.
A socialist may indeed be academically superior.
And yet, they are most certainly emotionally retarded.

Public education is the opiate of the masses.

Even the top of the line liberty "safe" would be opened in under 10 minutes with an angle grinder and a stack of cutting discs.

All they did was minimize the damage that would be done to gain access.
The FBI needed a warrant either way. Its not like if liberty gave them the code, it negates the need for a search warrant...

That said, liberty is still scum for dealing with the FBI at all.

There are differing accounts as to what the warrant was actually for and who the warrants were to and if there were multiple warrants.

I haven't seen any definitive on that yet so I'm not going to jump on any bandwagons.

I’d be interested to know if it was an S&G keypad (I know many Liberty safes have them, as does my non-Liberty safe), or a different brand of keypad.  I would assume spin lock safes don’t have this potential for a master code, because I believe this is part of the reason why spin locks are used for classified containers.

I have a small liberty safe in the garage that has an S&G keypad lock, but I haven’t installed the safe in the house yet (got it used for a steal), wondering if I should look at switching out to a spin lock.

I think a lot of people are missing the potential risk in the existence of a master code for a keypad at all, a disgruntled Liberty employee could just post it on the internet.  We’ll never know if the code was unique to that safes serial number, model, etc. but it’s possible.
9/7/2023 11:54:03 AM EDT
[#10]
The bottom line is ,if you have a Liberty Safe with an electronic keypad even if you have changed the combination, it has installed a master backdoor code which they freely gave the feds.

Multiple issues here, but the elephant in the room is if you have an electronic keypad not only IS THERE a back door, but Liberty has already provided it to feds.

Should we pretend there is a different master code for each one? Of course not.

Liberty has updated their "policy" in response to (righteous)  outrage and will now only give out the master code in response to a subpoena.

I would personally recommend changing to a mechanical lock set, and changing the combination on it if you actually value the contents.

Liberty also retained a database of combinations for mechanical locksets.

The key difference is you can change a mechanical combination and defeat their database. Even if you change an electronic pass code their master code still works.

Seriously?
Its a Liberty RSC gun cabinet... Its not a 10,000Lb Diebold or Mosler TRTLx6 safe...

If you think even a low skilled handyman wouldn't get into your RSC in a few minutes with some very basic cordless tools, you are only kidding yourself...

If Liberty had only a single master code then we all would know it, because every locksmith who had to open two Liberties would know there is only one code and very likely one of the many locksmiths would have leaked it. From what I read so far I can't conclude that Liberty gave the whole master key database to the feds.

I do also recommend mechanical locks and to change the combination. Strangely it seems to be rare that people do change the combination. If they did it would not make any sense that the safe manufacturers stored the combination. There would be no return of investment.

Btw. the AmSec ESL locks do have master codes too. This was me mentioned here in this forum many times. Nobody cared.

Liberty says, in the company’s défense, that FBI contacted them with a legal search warrant. They did not know what the person was accused of or what the FBI was looking for. Had the defendant been wanted for robbing armored cars or banks would anyone be calling for a boycott over a disclosed safe combo?

Thats why my safe has a real rating and weighs 4,500lbs…

An RSC keeps the smash and grab crackheads with a screwdriver or a small prybar out. Unless they know there is no risk of anyone coming home or an alarm bringing the cops. Then even a crackhead with a prybar will get into that RSC.

Its not going to keep out even a semi serious thief that is aware you have a safe and brought a backpack with some proper tools with them... Its def not going to keep out any Fed with a search warrant.

Multiple times I have personally opened name brand RSCs with nothing more than a normal length prybar, a halligan tool and a couple large guys.

Swap out the lock for the same model and Liberty no longer has any access. I changed mine last month in my 22yr old Liberty safe.

There is not a single bypass code on electronic locks.  Each code is unique to that lock, and stored in their database by safe serial number.

Previous posters were correct.  You can change your combination, but in most cases can not change the other code that they have installed.  That code will typically always open your lock.

I think you are so impressed with your safe that you fail to even remotely grasp the issue at hand.

Nobody is pretending the feds weren't going to get in the safe, least of all me.

The point is a piece of shit vendor making it easier for bigger pieces of shit to get into it.

I don't want anyone, an employee of the safe company, you or least of all some scummy fucking government employee having access to the combination of my safe.

If I know someone, anyone else has the combination I'll put in the work to make sure when the sun comes up tomorrow they don't anymore. LOL, my wife didn't have the combination to my safe for almost 30 years until we were on the way to the hospital and I thought I was certainly going to die.

I’m not so impressed with myself I failed to grasp anything. But this false rage and chest puffing by people because a safe company complied with a federal search warrant is a joke. As mentioned by some others, if this was a case with a guy who shot up a school yard, or someone who took a shot at Trump, no one would blink when the feds opened a safe. Bt because its a case of a guy from the capitol riots, well, now its all BB that liberty complied with a legal warrant? Please… the fact it was an RSC makes it even more of a joke as people are yelling like the feds would have no chance of getting in without that code…

Liberty gave what was demanded by a Federal court order. They arent going to be held in contempt and have the CEO thrown in jail because you think the Jan 6 investigation is a political salem witch trial.

And as for having a master code, its been mentioned on here and numerous other forums that all electronic locks have a master code that the factory has a list of. Amsec even mentions this fact in their owners manual, and tells you an AMSEC dealer is the only one they will give it to… not a big surprise…

Sorry if you never saw that, but its pretty common knowledge it existed for all the major brands of E-locks.

The search warrant was not for their records, they didn't comply with a search warrant or a  subpoena.

They freely and willfully provided the fucking government with their customers safe entry code while they were under absolutely no obligation legally to do so.

I'm going to be generous and assume from what you wrote there that you don't understand that.

Not that it matters but I don't have any electronic locks on my safes and the combinations are not as delivered from the manufacturers.

I’m going to be generous and assume from what you wrote there you dont know anything about criminal law. See I can be condescending too!

Whether they used a code from the manufacturer, or used a steel saw, or the freaking Jaws Of Life, regardless of how they opened the safe, if they dont have a warrant, everything inside becomes useless. Fruits of the poisonous tree. Everything in that safe would be tossed out in a heart beat. So while you can speculate they didn’t have a warrant, if they wanted anything from that safe to be used in court, they had a warrant… and if they didn’t have a warrant, and wanted to get in the safe on the illegal side of the fence, the last thing they would do is call the corporation that made the safe and ask for a code… the FBI has their own safe crackers, they would have got in without anyone ever knowing.
