So my sons friend has this M1, some parts painted red. Then there is some sort of disc on the side of the stock. Barrel is dirty or badly pitted, not my rifle so I did not want to mess with it. Some pics..Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Interesting on the grenade sight, honestly did not know they side mounted. I believe if I did my research right it was manufactured around November/December 1943. It is missing the stacking swivel. Unfortunately I do not have the tools to check for barrel erosion. Waiting to hear back if he wants to sell it. I currently have 1 M1 in my collection, figured if price is right why not make it 2. |

If it swallows the entire bullet, the bore is done for, 1/16th inch, pretty much gone, around 1/4 inch, it's likely a good barrel if it's not all pitted up. |

Will try the bullet test later today. With a piece of paper and light, rifling at chamber end looks sharp and you see the lands look strong. About 1/4 way from chamber to about 3 inches from muzzle. You can see either a heavy rough surface. However you can see the rifling in some sections. Almost looks like it could be dust and oil build up, but could just be corrosion and pitting as well. Will try to get pictures as well later today, will report back. |
| What is the date on the barrel? From the rear sight and stock cartouche, it may be all original (except for the grenade sight base and the red paint) |

When you see odd things like these red painted parts, you approach this with great care. The parts were painted for some reason and it might be safety related. I'd use the car tire test fire method....Stick the the butt into an old car tire and tie or strap the fore end to the tire. Use a long string to the trigger to fire. Start with one round in the rifle and inspect the fired case and rifle, then load two and test again. |
