Is the charging handle on the MR556A4 proprietary?

It has latches on both sides (and receiver recesses too). If you’re asking if you can use other CHs on an A4, yes. If you’re asking if you can use an A4 CH elsewhere, if it has both receiver recesses, probably.

The charging handle on the MR556A4 isn't horrible, but I was considering putting a Geissele super charging handle.

Then the answer is yes, but you'd lose whatever advantage(s) there is to the dual receiver latches. Hk obviously believes there's advantages, hence the change from the A1 to the A4.

The earlier A1 models had the recess for both sides but just that you had to reverse the latches to one side or the other from what I recall. So I don't think HK changed much other than making it a double latch model.

But yeah it works with any CH out there as it is not proprietary. The Haenel clone model though used some sort of proprietary CH though. I recall it was a tad big longer.
