I've been looking for any night time or dark room video of the IRIS 4's white light, but haven't found anything yet. What I want to know is whether the IRIS 4 will have decent flood or if it's a more directed beam. Should be pretty similar to a TLR-1 HL which has 1000 lumens, 20,000 candela. Mostly flood. |

If it leans more towards the flood side of the spectrum it will probably end up damn near every rifle and PDW that I have. I see that Steiner is teasing their VCSEL Prototype, but the word is that although it could be released this year that it will be another $3K unit. I haven't heard any update on the Zbolt ACAL, let me know if anyone here has any details on it. So far, it's look like the IRIS is set to just absolutely dominate the civilian LAM market. Holosun will need to start churnig those things out in higher numbers, I think they're going to get more demand than they anticipated. |

We will see. Spec sheet on the Steiner unit looks epic. The ACAL is supposedly shipping in April/May. I will with hold judgement but the ACAL is a day late, dollar short. I really do believe that any modern MFAL should have a way to adjust divergence on the fly. Or, a CQB illuminator at the press of a button. Apparently, the ACAL follows the D2 in that you have to rotate the illuminator bezel to adjust the divergence. Meeehhhh.... I'm sure the unit will be potent and I like the in-line laser but i'm hard pressed to see the benefit of the ACAL over the Iris. The UI on the IRIS trumps 99% of legacy units for a third of the cost... Thankfully, Holosun is a manufacturing giant. They should have no issues producing a bazillion of these things. |

The Iris 4 was quoted by a Holosun rep as "Q4", not even as ambitious as they acted with the GR3. So way too early for people to get antsy about the 4. And yes I know some jackleg posted some link to some company saying that had it (the 4!!!) - I would remind you that on page 2 or 3 of this thread someone also posted that the Iris GR3 was available some place last May But they didn't ship a single one till first of January... And the white light on the "4" is NOT slaved to the visible laser. |

Also, I asked about if an IR/IR unit was in the works, ala a 9007 type model. Unfortunately no. Which sucks for me cause I hate this "vis override" BS. You can contrive a weird arse scenario where it would be useful all you want, but I don't care for it. |

You can contrive a weird arse scenario where it would be useful all you want, but I don't care for it. I’ve heard it’s useful for it being activated in conjunction with your white light for target acquisition if you have to go to white light immediately without getting behind your optic. Something I don’t see any non operators having a real use for. I don’t see any logical scenario for the current Iris tape switch bc that’s just a laser button alone without the white light capability. Would love to hear if there are any other legitimate use cases for vis override. |

I don't want to derail the thread but you don't need to "contrive" a "weird arse scenario" in which vis over ride is useful. It's a legitimate need depending on use case. Domestic LE, vis over ride makes a whole lot of sense. It may not fit your use case but it does for a lot of end users. |

What exactly are the legitimate use cases for vis over ride? The only thing I can think of is designating something to people without NODs. |

What exactly are the legitimate use cases for vis over ride? The only thing I can think of is designating something to people without NODs. I’m just an average guy who likes to shoot under NODs and compete in low light/NV competitions every once in a while, so take my opinion for the limited knowledge that I have. Generally when I’m shooting under NODs I’m running an active IR laser/illuminator but I also have my red dot set on NV mode so I can shoot passive too. In one of the matches I shot, I switched back and forth between active and passive throughout the night because the active LED-based illuminator was lighting up my muzzle smoke and blinding me. I shot as much as I could passive, but some of the targets were in shadows and impossible to make out without active IR. (I’ve since upgraded to an IRIS-3, hence this is still kind of on subject for this thread). The main scenario I see for a VIS override is being in the dark under NODs with my red dot turned way down and suddenly opening a door to a well-lit room or some outdoor setting where it suddenly gets very bright, like stadium lights getting flipped on, car headlights, or even something remote like an illumination flare. Since my dot isn’t visible to my unaided eye and my LAM is set to IR, it would be nice to have an instantaneous visible aiming reference without having to crank up the brightness on my dot or fiddle with the switches on my LAM. Now admittedly, it’s a pretty remote chance, but just this week when I was messing around with my IRIS under NODs in my backyard, I forgot to turn off my motion detector floodlight and it got me. Completed darkness to BAM bathed in near sunlight. I was able to look under my NODs and see, but with the red dot on NV setting I had no visible aiming reference. At the time I hadn’t added the tape switch and was just running the onboard button. That scenario had me go inside and add the tape switch to the rail. |

Basically already stated, but. If you are running a red dot and have it set on NV settings you wont be able to see it if you go white light for any reason (PID/NODs go down/etc.) so its nice to have. I mostly shoot passive, so I want as small of a laser/light as possible, IRIS-4 seems perfect for me and what I want. |

Can't tell you how many times at the start of the night phase of class, even after a discussion about checking your settings, etc. we have a "Pink Floyd laser light show" on the first drill. What is supposed to be just IR is all the colors of the rainbow, plus white light. I will leave it to you what that might mean in "the real world" LOL. And to be honest, we have a fair amount of cops, current and retired mil etc. so it ain't just civilians doing this. Sometimes keeping things simple is the best way to go. To each his own, probably the best way to say that I was told by one of the Holosun techs that you could switch the remote switch out and get rid of the vis override- for anyone interested in doing that. |

That makes sense. I know you speak from a lot of experience and I’m not disagreeing with you in any way. I initially planned to run the IRIS without the tape switch and just use the onboard activation. I still plan to run it that way almost exclusively due to the slider function of the IR illuminator and the need for my thumb to be on the device anyway. Running a tape switch with the IRIS seems antithetical to its form and function. I added the tape switch just for its vis function and set it far enough back that it’s pretty awkward to activate it and I really have to want to. If I was running the unit with the tape switch exclusively for the IR function, I’d definitely opt for a different Crane Switch that deleted the override. I don’t see how people run a dual use tape switch and not fumble into the vis side inadvertently. I know I would. If I run it in my current setup with the tape switch being only for override and have a ND vis laser, the tape switch is coming off, but I think my slightly awkward placement and using the onboard button for the IR side should mitigate that sufficiently enough. I’ll throw a bunch of rounds downrange and see. |

Dogma really doesn't have a place, but we should try to adapt things to our particular situations. I.e, I can kinda see the LE angle for the need for the vis override as Magz stated. I don't exactly love the placement of the fire button on the unit itself, will likely replace the factory switch at some point. My question as to the "need" for it via the scenario presented would be this- once you entered a structure, what is your average engagement distance? Outside of the oddities of say a Sam's Club warehouse or even a large school, the need for a longer distance shot is rare. If your talking dwellings than what maybe 5 yards? I'm sure it would break the internet if I asked why you need to use your sights at that small distance? Every time I've ran through a FOF training house either training various places or at our own FOF house, I've always asked other people- "did you use your sights?" To wit I rarely ever get a positive response. It's usually coy smiles and eyes opened wide like "oh shit, point shooting really does fricking work!" |

To wit I rarely ever get a positive response. It's usually coy smiles and eyes opened wide like "oh shit, point shooting really does fricking work!" Inside 5 yards on a big target, I’m point shooting the hell out of that, as I’ve done countless times on USPSA speed stages. I will drive out the gun and Hulk Smash that trigger unless I’ve got to take a shot on an extremely small or occluded target, then I want something that is a little more precise and the dot has to come back on target. What made me re-think and put my tape switch on just for vis override was two factors. First was the motion-activated spotlight incident in my backyard that I described. I want to be more than point shoot accurate out to 20-50yards. The other, which I may get laughed at here, is I recently raised my optic to 1.93” from a lower 1/3, rendering my back-up iron sights obsolete so I removed them. Knowing I have a secondary aiming (admittedly being a laser it is super short range in daylight, moderately short in indoor/dusk/twilight) option if the main optic fails or I forget to turn my dot back to its visible setting. Having a quick way to get an immediate aiming reference without fumbling with a rotary switch or a dial gives me some comfort. As far as the on board button on the IRIS goes, I can reach it fairly easily and I kind of feel like I need to due to my thumb having to be in close proximity to the illumination slider, arguably the best feature of the device. I have fairly large hands, so it’s not too bad for me. Edited to say: Just playing with this IRIS I’ve noticed the vis override fires at the low setting even if the unit is set to Hi. It seems like it should be on the high setting to maximize the visibility of the laser. |

This is where I’m at. We’ve raved about this unit for way too long, and for them to miss a detail like that I believe is unacceptable. I was willing to wait it out to buy a US product, but it looks like Holosun is getting my money. |

Without the ability to simultaneously activate the white light with the viz override from the same button it's a useless feature in my layman opinion. If someone can think of a scenario where they would need immediate viz laser, but not also white light let me know. Holosun should either figure out a way to activate white light with Viz with the same button push or just remove the Viz override option to remove a tech point of failure and simplify production to hopefully push per unit cost down. Features are cool, but they add complexity, points of failure, cost and if they're not practical they are more a hinderance than helpful. That's why honestly some of the $3K+ units are neat with their 200 different programmable options, but frankly I don't really want some unit I need to take a class on programming for. Just give me meat and potatoes at a reasonable price. |

In his opinion, it may not be necessary. There’s a reason all top tier optic mount manufacturers use them with all the various super duper steel alloys. Show me a currently manufactured optic mount from a reputable company without a recoil lug and I’ll buy his claim. Otherwise, the 4104 steel claim is a cop out due to oversight IMO. |

I've lost interest in the ACAL. Having said that, the cross bolt that he's got on the unit is squared off to act as a recoil lug. Whether or not it's enough remain to be seen by those that want to try the unit. I wont be one of them. |

Yeah, I'm not in a rush, because I have a Steiner DBAL A3 already and I'm not taking any night vision courses this summer. That said, I'm going to pick up an IRIS 3, because I want my 16" AR to have a separate light mounted to it that has max candella and I want to upgrade and switch that out, since white lights seems to advance a lot faster than LAMs. I'm going to wait for the IRIS 4 though for my shorter rifles. |
