Even if the IRIS doubled in price it would still be the same price as its closest VCSEL competitor the 3EIR DIR-V and offer you a better laser housing, more options like crane plug, and better ergos. It would still come in at roughly $1.5K less than a MAWL or RAID Xe. IRIS is tough to beat. IRIS 3 Green is still available through the Canadian retailer Cold Harbor Supply for a listed $994 USD. I think it's the hands down best LAM for civilians right now. Even if I had money to burn I don't see why I would for the MAWL or RAID Xe right now. One Hundred Concepts guys even liked the IRIS more than the EOTech OGL. I am curious though to see the new 3EIR VCSEL with the aluminum housing that is coming out soon, but I'm sure that's still going to be a $2K+ price tag. |
| That's awful pricey for a laser with no divergence control on the illuminator besides the use of a diffuser. Certainly seems like a very mediocre product on paper; I haven't seen that much great feedback on the OGL, but that seems to be a better product for the price that the Sentinel-IRV is going to cost, let alone trying to compete with the IRIS (even with tariffs). |

Agreed, I couldn't justify purchase of a Sentinel or an OGL when the Holosun is available, even if the Holosun were to increase in price, which it shouldn't now. My understanding is that Trump is ending the tariff on individual packages from China as well, this could help folks who go the Laserspeed M6TR route and are purchasing from Chinese retailers. Although, right now I don't think I'd go with the M6TR over the Holosun or recommend anyone else do so. IRIS is tough to beat. I think for now, it's the Glock of LAMs. Can you get something better with more wizbang features? Sure, like the RAID Xe, but it's going to cost you just like you'll pay out the nose for a Staccato over a Glock. I'm perfectly good with being a Glock guy and I'm perfectly good with being an IRIS guy. |
|
That's a very astute observation, and one I happen to agree with. It's amusing to me that TNVC posts up a "civilian MFAL" comparison in the "Adult" section, conveniently listing everything they sale, while completely ignoring the foreign competition. Which you can do since you kicked out all the "foreign trash" to this forum. Prices will increase but that's because shipping and production costs have increased, not the tariffs. Hoepfully not double but slightly more. |

The Raid is an expensive, modern PEQ that has a divergence wheel that is never set to the same position as it gets moved constantly on kit. The IRIS stomps the ever loving fuck out of every American laser. Unless of course you're fishing for Instagram cloud with your sweet "FP" unit. The IRIS, even at double its current price point is worth it. Do I want to see a cost increase? Absolutely not but we are powerless to change this. Here's to hoping Holosun is able to minutely increase the price to deal with the Tariffs and we can all move on with life with a safe full of IRIS lasers. The ACAL is an antiquated boat at this point. I like that 3EIR is attempting to release new products but again, there's zero innovation there. It's a box with diodes in it that has no UI improvements and no feature improvements. The IRIS is not perfect but it's certainly functional, affordable and well designed. |

Even if money was no object whatsoever, I don't think I'd pay for a RAID Xe at this point and certainly wouldn't go with the much heavier MAWL. I really do think the IRIS is a better LAM . Yeah, I want the ACAL to come out, but I'm not holding my breath. I too applaud 3EIR, they're at least trying to do something new at a much more reasonable price point, but yeah I feel like there isn't much innovation there with it at all, certainly not enough to eclipse the IRIS. Nobody cheers harder than me for U.S. companies, I'm in Michigan I fully understand the vital importance of U.S. manufacturing 110%. That support isn't unconditional and detrimental support though. If a US company could put out a unit that was as innovative as the IRIS with even a 25% cost above what the IRIS goes for than I'd be all about it, but wishing for something doesn't make it so. |
|
I have a question about the IRIS. I have not seen one in person, but from the handful of videos I've seen I have a concern. At this point on my 2 main carbine uppers I'm still using the PERST 3. One of the things I hate about that LAM is the illumination circumference. At its widest setting it's probably 1/2 the size it should be IMO. From the videos, I fear the IRIS suffers from the same condition. Anybody think the IRIS illuminator is not wide enough when spread to its fullest setting? I couldn't care less about shrinking it down to pointer size. Anybody use both the IRIS and the PERST that can compare the two illuminator patterns? Thanks in advance. |
The 2nd amendment is not just a right, it's a responsibility. So train like it...
|
We mentioned that back in January. The spotlight size is smaller than a D2, but it doesn't have the overpowering washout the D2 has. Is it a limitation? Not IME. More isn't necessarily better. |

His SIG MCX in .308, not so well, at least not the rail on it. Those MCX rails have a reputation for not holding zero and shifting, if 4MR spent his money on one to be a test bed for lasers he got ripped off and should have just went with an AR or a SCAR if he really wanted something rough in recoil. |

Not trying to pollute the iris thread but I was at a night vision shoot a few weeks ago where the guy who makes the Penumbra was there. Also someone who had an iris. I saw them both, the iris is was half the size and seemed to me have better controls. The controls on the Penumbra where all on the back plus the crane port. It seemed very crowded to me but the guy ran his thumb up and changed the IR angle and the settings very quickly. I did not actually get to play with either, but did see the penumbra when he was using it, I just did not pay any attention to the beam or the laser. He did say he hates the iris, I assume because it costs basically half of his laser and is smaller. I was using a sms laser, I would like an iris just hard to justify it costing almost 4 times as much as the SMS. But yes the iris form factor seems very very nice and I would like to try one out. |

I have no scientific data to back this other than my own experience but any light with less than 50K candela doesn't pierce tint very well, especially at distance. We will see. I have no doubt that the Iris 4 will be an awesome unit. It just may not be the do it all unit that you're hoping for. You're probably going to have to compromise somewhere. It looks like it has an optic. I know Surefire really nerfs their ratings by 50-75% on the Scout lights for Candela, so I am curious what the ACTUAL Candella of this is. Until we see it, it's just conjecture though, as it could be very off-rated. |
| I think that the Iris is going to be a strong contender in the cheaper category. That said, I keep trying out Chinese products and refunding them. They just don't hold up for me. I tried a Chinese car, an Infitac, and other various things. I would buy an evaluate this Iris, but it seems others are already noting shifting zero, etc. |

You just have the option of cheaper risers. |

To clarify for anyone reading, Brass Facts is talking about a "permanent" shift in POA of the laser, not to be confused with temporary flex/deflection when pressure is applied to his rail. I agree it is a confounding factor with these kinds of tests. It takes remarkably little movement of a handguard to create a very visible shift in the laser POA. He does have a bit of experience with the Raid Xe, which must have factored into his comment about lasers retaining zero. Maybe you do get better zero retention for 4x the price?

In its defense, it was pretty much the best way to get a good illuminator while staying inside civ power limits when released, but the IRIS has it beat in almost every conceivable way now.
