I switched my Swedish Mauser sight back to the original the other day so that was a good excuse to stretch the legs on these rifles today. The range name is edited out of 2 of the pics because I may post them on reddit. It's Silver Creek Range in Chunchula, AL. I can shoot in my backyard to 100 yards but this place is 20 min away. I really enjoy shooting irons at distance. It really helps when there is some cloud coverage. There was more at the beginning but overall the conditions were good enough but not perfect. When the berm behind the targets is purely sand like the 500 yard target that is where I have a hard time. I could not see the yellow ones with the naked unmagnified eye on the 500 yard berm. I could make out the white one but it was not easy. I made hits with both guns on it. The 600 yard targets were much easier to see. There were no 600 yard targets up the last time I shot the M96. Today I found it hits at 600 yards point of aim on the 500 yard setting with Prvi Partizan 120 gr match. That ammo is pretty good but the tangent sight must be calibrated for a slightly heavier round I think. It actually shoots more high the further out I go respective of the sight setting. Im going to reload for it soon and I will try to figure out what bullet weight was used with these back in the day. It was fun. I could probably get further out with the garand but I would need a spotter. I made 3 hits on the 700 yard target with the m96 but there were shadows or something and I could barely make the target out. Always a good time. I shot from 200-600 with the Garand and 200-700 with the M96.

The standard military loading when Sweden switched from the heavy round nose original loading to the spitzer type projectile was 141grain, as I recall. If you can find some of the original Swedish military ammo it's worth picking up, as it is accurate stuff. 120 grain is pretty light for the 6.5x55 at those distances.

I probably have rifle powder that will work. Once I get through the 120gr ammo I'll have about 500 pieces of ppu brass, and 100 s&b plus some pmc. Ill get it sized trimmed, annealed, etc probably late fall. Need to shoot it more but it's so hot. |
