It's also impossible unless you have a Surefire. I have one and have no use for it as it provides no constant on for the light. Clayvt, a better bet would be to put the tapeswitch where your support hand's fingers are. The very first post of the thread shows this. I have a scout light I can activate with my thumb, and simultatiously activate the laser with the fingers of the same hand. Much better to me than balancing 2 closely placed switches with one thumb. |

This thread is awesome, really like seeing all the different set-up methods.
I was looking at purchasing an IR laser and had a quick question concerning mounting position. Is there a functional difference to mounting the laser further back as opposed to keeping it out towards to the muzzle? I would think mounting it closer to the receiver would be best for balance purposes but others I have spoken to have said it is not optimal. In the short amount of time I had a PEQ-2 mounted to my M16, I was instructed by my unit armorer to mount it as far forward as possible. When I asked why, the only reason he could give was that "the manual says so." Actually got yelled at when he caught me with it mounted at the back of the rail. I'm sort of a small guy and I also had a 203 mounted at the time, so aiming the rifle felt like doing curls. Then again this is also the same guy that told me the PEQ-2 was only effective out to 40 meters so I was somewhat skeptical to begin with. Does anyone have any insight into this issue? Is it all about preference or is there really an optimal mounting position? |

There's optical alignment issues, as well as keeping the laser free of anything that it could reflect off of. Rear mounting the laser is an ergonomic compromise for those taht shoot with a forward grip. |
