A coworker bought one thinking it was a regular M1 Garand stock and I did some research and come to find out it's an Italian 7.62 NATO stock which won't fit a regular Garand. Is there a market for these? He's trying to recoup the $60 he paid for it. I saw them for sale on a few sites for $50-$70 bucks but they don't appear to be selling.

It won't fit an M1 (rifle)?  An Italian M1 rifle made on US tooling is an M1.

Is it a BM-59 stock?  That's a  Beretta development detachable magazine derivative of the M1.

They're 1/2'' shorter than a STD Garand stock and they don't fit BM-59s. They require an extension to fit a STD Garand

I believe the Italians converted US surplus .30-06 M1's to 7.62 NATO by cutting and re-threading the barrel at the breech, thereby shortening the rifle by about 1/2 inch. The stocks were shortened accordingly.

About the only market for it is if someone is building a BM59E.

If in really nice shape he should be able to recoup $.

Did you actually try to install it? Sarco was modding them to add the lost 1/2in back onto the end. I have one of those on my guns and it is great. I did have to sand a little in the oprod channel for clearance.

No, I was going to try that last night but had a busy evening. I did not notice a splice anywhere on the stock but I'll try it tonight just to see.

ETA: I tried it during my lunch break. It definitely does not fit.

They are very tight and nice looking stocks. However you are very limited what you can do with them. They don’t go for much by themselves because a BM59E barrel, op rod and rear hand guard is needed to use them. NOS Italian rear and front hand guards can still be found. Lightly used op rods and barrels are available but also go for cheaper than similar M1 parts.

All of these.

I have a Sarco re-extended stock on my Mini-G, and it's a sweet item for a sweet little rifle, with the benefit of re-using several items that would otherwise not see light of day (and saving the collectible stuff for collectors).

I tried to get my Garand action on in and it is definitely too short. It's not mine anyhow so nothing lost. It does have an original butt plate on it so hopefully my coworker can get a few bucks back.
