So they made them with a 6 round magazine, which meant the barrel lug had to be further out, so you can’t swap barrels, but other than that, is there any downside to owning one or having one?

I’ve got some regular ones with the +2, but may have a chance to pick one up locally for a good price.  Just wanted to make sure it was only the barrels that are different, all other parts should be the same.

Thanks in advance.

It might limit your options if you want it to suddenly be shorter due to freedom.

Other than that, post pictures if you get it.  This is how I am used to seeing them:

Mossberg/Maverick do the same long mag versions, and those are still in production & you can get factory parts for em.  Unless you're dead set on an out of production platform, I'd go Maverick or Mossberg.

They were made towards the tail end of 870 production and are pretty much an anomaly. I personally see no reason to own them and I'm a 870 fan.

I am personally disappointed that I was not aware of that model.  Professional pride.

I would probably buy one if I stumbled into one. Not that I need another shotgun, and not at a collectors premium price for sure!

I am partial to Speed Feed stocks, however... that speed feed pistol grip stock is the most awkward and ugly pistol grip stock I have ever seen or used!

I'm a 870 addict, so I had to have one in my herd.  I fitted it with a M-4 type telescoping stock & it is a very compact package.

The extended one piece magazine tube & thus further forward placement of the barrel lug are "the difference".

A Tactical is factory 6+1 due to the extended one piece tube.
A standard 870 with a +2 extension = 6+1

Will post pictures later today.

Bigger_Hammer

Edited to add photos:

The Tactical is "Express Matt Blued".
The Police Magnum is "Parkerized".
(IMHO Parkerized is superior against rust)

The Tactical had the late production "dimple magazine tube with a twist lock". I put a Wilson Wave Washer on it (Just In Case).

Tactical has a synthetic trigger guard.
Police Magnum has steel trigger guard.
(IMHO the Steel has superior strength)

I don't know that very many "Tacticals" were made prior to Remington's end of production. They do seem sort of a rarity.

Both  guns have been fitted with Hogue rubber forearms with side mounts for VERY bright lights at proper thumb activation distance to "Let there be LIGHT!" at "O Dark something".

Mine had a weak magazine spring.  It fed but didn’t inspire confidence. I suspect they put the wrong spring in.

I replaced it with a longer spring and never had any complaints.

@TX_CA-Cop

Mention in thread to you via this post as I could  @ in any edited thread.

They are an interesting and not very common 870 Variant.

I would have really liked it more it if Remington had tapped the top for a possible optics mount option. Because that would be Ninja / SEAL / Delta level TACTICAL

Yeah, I have pretty much stayed away from them, due to the barrel issue, but one may be available at a good price, so I may grab it.  I have a couple others that are able to swap barrels so no big loss if 1 can’t. If I end up with it I will post pics.

One of the many cool things about 870s is the fact that you can add / swap parts to get just about anything you need or want.

The "Tactical" does have some benefits (one piece magazine tube vs a short tube with a screw on extension.  I don't know for a fact, but my gut tells me not having a joint on the magazine tube joining two parts would lessen opportunities for snags or failure.

Remington was making a metal sleeve you could 'drop down' the exterior of the 870 Tacticals extended magazine tube that would provide a support point & allow use of "standard" 870 barrels.  I bet there are others out there offering similar

Like ARs, lot and lots and lots of ways to customize & configure a 870 to be whatever you want it to be.

$100M Remington investment in LaGrange faces foreclosure, investor meeting canceled

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A $100 million investment once thought to be a game-changer for the city of LaGrange is now less than a month away from foreclosure.

Investor Chris Ripley, a venture capitalist, was planning to invite stakeholders to a town hall meeting to hear his plan to revive the company, but that has been put on pause.

Ripley said he was recently served a lawsuit, meaning he can't talk about his next steps in the plan.

Remington officials announced in 2021 they would be moving their headquarters to LaGrange from New York. The plans were to create hundreds of jobs for local residents.

According to Ripley's team, there are over 200 unpaid creditors from construction workers, electricians and many others. Now with a pending lawsuit, Ripley will not be able to share any further plans about the project.

Ripley said there are plenty of businesses who have not been paid and he was going to right those wrongs.

The meeting was to allow those stakeholders to know a plan moving forward, but now that will have to wait.

I've heard that some were made with PVC too, but I'm a "Conservative / Traditionalist" and would strongly prefer metal for the sleeve.

If I may make a comment - "collectibles" usually sit in a glass case doing little to nothing except getting dusty & rusty.  These most definitely get frequent & fun workouts!

Connoisseur of fine firearms ha!  My best pistol shot was with a HiPoint at 130 yds, but you'll remember the target was 5' tall.

Just keep in mind if you break an ejector on those out of production shotguns, you'll need to buy the replacement kit that sets a bolt on the left side of the receiver, that might lower the value of your collection a bit.  Hopefully it's back in stock by the time you need it:

WOW!

First time I'm ever seen one of those.

It looks very much like a Nordic type design. Tube of varying lengths with screw on threads at each end.

Thanks for sharing about something I hadn't ever seen in / from Remington before.

Pretty sure there was a healthy dose of big money fuckery with Remington. Private equity or whatever they call it. Might have even been twice. Hard if not impossible to recover from that stuff.

Both Colt & Remington were each screwed huge by Private Equity companies who bought the brands, stripped away cash while burdening them with massive debts, and then after looting all they could they walked away to let them collapse.

Colt is 'back' under the ownership of CZ.

The extended one piece magazine tube & thus further forward placement of the barrel lug are "the difference".

A Tactical is factory 6+1 due to the extended one piece tube.
A standard 870 with a +2 extension = 6+1

Will post pictures later today.

Both  guns have been fitted with Hogue rubber forearms with side mounts for VERY bright lights at proper thumb activation distance to "Let there be LIGHT!" at "O Dark something".

last photo Bonus - When people say "A Mossberg 590 is "superior" because you can mount a bayonet on a 590 and you can't on an 870"...

Hope you find this helpful.
