FWIW, I had a shot-out M249 barrel that I wanted to replace the barrel itself, and move the barrel socket, gas block, etc from the old barrel to the new one. After hours of research, I was unable to come up with a drawing or even a description of how the socket is installed/removed. Anyway, I finally got the thing apart and found that what I thought was a single piece, is actually two pieces, with the front part acting as a locking collar/jam nut. Thread is M20 x 1.5 right hand. On an AR-15, it's called an extension, on an M60 it's called a socket and I have no idea what it's called on the M249 since I was never able to find any information on it. Maybe this post will hit the archives and someday someone will find it useful. Tony  |
