Cock on open bolts are dumb.  Why?  Cock on closing is so much nicer (enfields, various mausers, etc.) Anyway, shooting the RAR, I have to hold the rifle down to open the bolt after firing. Can't really remain seated at a bench of a bag or bipod, since you gotta wrestle the rifle to chamber the next round.  I could easily carry the rifle around all day with the closed bolt, and the firing pin down, and it would never open with just the weight of the rifle.  Maybe 15lbs of lift to cock the firing pin and open the bolt.  Can I reduce this by repeatedly cycling the bolt (close the bolt with the trigger pulled, and then lift, repeat)?  Any other fix?

Is this with a round in the chamber?  I have three and can lift the bolts with very little effort.  The .308 especially.

Either with a fired round, or empty.

Also, using CLP as grease, should I use a different lube?

I'm going to assume the gun is completely stock at this point?

First thing I would do is take the bolt apart and see if the cocking piece is broken.  Ruger had issues with that if I recall right. They changed the design at some point and there is also an aftermarket fix.   Next I would check the rear stock bolt and see if it's interfering with  movement.

CLP would be fine by the way.

They are very tight and rough when new.  It smooths up nicely over time.  It needs 500 cycles or so to get easier.  If you want it truly smooth, get some polishing compound and coat the bolt and contact surfaces.  Dry fire it 300 times.  Clean thoroughly.

AD Arms Billet Ruger Precision/American Rifle Cocking Piece.

Better metallurgy than the OEM part, and it decreased the cocking force by a few lbs on my American Ranch 5.56.

Don't forget the firing pin removal tool if you don't have one.  Changing out the cocking piece is an easy swap, there are videos on YouTube showing the bolt disassembly if you've never done it before.

Polishing the cocking ramps/caming surfaces of the bolt helps. But I haven't had one that is as hard to cycle as you describe. Mine have all been a little rough but nothing that has bothered me.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try polishing the cooking ramps. It's definitely cocking the firing pin that's causing the resistance, because lifting the bolt with the firing pin already cocked is fine. If that doesn't work, maybe the aftermarket cocking piece will do it.

Maybe it's time to hit the gym.   Just saying got a compact model in 308 and the bolt feels about the same as my other bolt guns.  Maybe call Ruger up and see what they have to say?

I use a little Super Lube grease on the cocking surfaces of my Remington 700 and smoothed things out.

It’s the spring. The firing pin spring is heavy as shit on mine.
