| What kind of accuracy are you getting with the new Ruger Mini 14 with scope optic? Everyone is talking about 2 MOA at 100 yards, is that with iron sights or some form of optic. |

With my ancient eyes, 2 inches is a wish long ago passed. I think the practical group size even with good hand loaded ammo is typically around 4 inches with my Mini. I have gotten as small as 1/2 inch but not consistently. Some folks get some really good Mini's with new barrels and can consistently get 2 inches with a quality scope. But, if you buy a new Mini and want to get 2" it's the luck of the draw. WAs your Mini built on a Monday or a Friday ?? Factor in FMJ ammo and we are back to the 4". Some good quality varmint or target ammo will close that gap but probably not with FMJ's. Besides, it's the first shot that counts the most. What I am trying to say is there are too many factors involved to think you are going to get 2" every time you go to the range. The barrel (.625 at the muzzle) is not as heavy as most AR's (.750) and there are also several moving parts that can adversely affect the accuracy. If you were to ask if the Mini is Minute of Bad Guy at 100 yards and I can say, oh hell yes. It's a home and ranch defense rifle people buy for the ergonomics and the fact it's not an AR. Just keep in mind, it's not a bullseye target rifle. kwg |

Most users of modern "heavy barrel" Mini-14s report about 2 MOA (+/-) given good quality ammo. Some handloaders who make ammo specifically for their Mini-14s report somewhat better accuracy. There are tweaks and mods (many user DIY and low/no cost) which can often enhance accuracy a bit more. |

@Bounce 19712 Depending on the level of accuracy that your "Pencil Barrel" 184 series displays, you may have many alternatives to possibly improve it. For example, installing some thin shims at the insides of the stock can reduce action movement within the stock, always a good thing. Cheap and DIY. Installing a Short Choate Recoil Compensator which is actually a combo A2 flash suppressor and improved winged, military front sight, will add some mass to the end of the barrel, reducing barrel whip. Installing a Dual Clamp Accu Strut will almost always help, often considerably. Note that the Single Strut Accu Strut not nearly as effective as the Dual Strut version--as per the Mfr. Using good quality ammo is also part of the equation. Use this Barrel Rate Of Twist Chart for identifying the bullet weight guidelines. It appears that your barrel might be 1-7" ROT or 1-10" ROT, and it would not be surprising if bullet weight makes a difference, so DO experiment as every Mini is a little different |

@kwg020 I had my eye lenses replaced (due to incipient cataracts) by Medicare, with only a few hundred bucks out of pocket. Let's just say the Eye Doctor "worked with me" to detect very early signs of glaucoma. I can see with 20/20 vision for the first time in my adult life and I can use all rifle/pistol Iron Sights and Optics without problems. Sure, I need "Reading glasses", but My Driver's License now has NO "Corrective Eyewear Required" endorsement for the first time ever. Even scanning car instrument panel is no issue. First lens replacement is naturally an "anxious" moment, but the second lens replacement is "Hey, let's get this over with, I got things to do." It's a whole new world out there. One of the best damn things I ever did. |

One of the best damn things I ever did. I did have cataract surgery last spring and I can now use my iron sights again. My right eye has some serious astigmatism and the doctor did his best to give me 2020 vision in that eye but he was not completely successful. My left eye is 2020. I do wear glasses with some correction in the right eye. I suppose if the right eye ever gets bad again, I will have to learn to shoot left handed. Let's hope that is years away. kwg |
