I've got a bunch of lever guns in various calibers and I've always been a purist...no need for a scope on a 150 yard gun. But recently, I puts an Aimpoint T1Micro on the top of my new S&W 1854 44 mag and loved just how quick and accurate it was. This got me to thinking...do I want to put an old Leupold fixed 4x on my 1895SBL?

Who rocks glass on a lever gun?

I put a Leupold VX2 1.5-4 IER scope on mine.  it's mounted with leupold  QR rings so if I decide to go to irons, it's very simple.

I use a Burris FFII 3-9x40 on my '65 WesternField (Marlin built) 30-30. I need it for old eyes and our State has a minimum 4-tine count on one antler to be legal for bucks, then the scope goes quickly to 9 power to count, so at a distance of even 50yds, those antlers can be very hard to make out when in the shadows of forest or brush.

Two of my eight lever guns have fixed 2.75x Burris scout scopes. It's a phenomenal improvement for fields, but in thick woods it makes discernment more of a challenge.

For what little it may be worth, I prefer my scoped weapons for hunting over my open sights.

I was at a shop a week or two ago.   The owner showed me his old marlin with a compact Leupold 2-7x.  I have to say it, being small, seemed nice....said the guy with a bit of a cataract in my shooting eye.

My Dad and his buddies are big fans of Henry lever action rifles.  They like putting the Nikon 3x fixed power compact scope they used to sell.  Actually those scopes are damn near perfect for a short to medium range rifle such as these.  It too bad they stopped making them.

I still run a 3x9 Bushnell I bought at Walmart on a Browning BLR .22 that I’ve had since I was a kid.  Great combo for squirrels.

The old eyes aren't what they used to be.
Positive gender ID and aimpoint in low light is a lot easier for me with this glass.

When I was a kid it seemed most Marlin 30-30 (THE deer gun in my area of TX) had a scope. Now that I’m way past 40 I understand why. I’m thinking about getting a lever action .357 carbine and considering what optic would I use with it.

I have a 4x on my 1894.  Doesn’t look very good but it certainly helps my shooting so I don’t care.

I have an old Glenfield 30 with a scout rail. I have the option of running irons, a red dot, 2.75 Burris scout scope, or a

Vortex 2x7 scout scope. This gives me lots of choices depending on the hunt, ammo testing, play time.

The Leupold 2.5x20 is great, I have one on an AR and want another for my .44 Henry. Ashley Emerson has a super low mount for Marlin leverguns, that 2.5 has about 5 inches of eye relief so you should be able to mount it in front of the hammer.

My friend has a Marlin 30-30 with a Vortex Viper 1-6x on it in a one piece mount (Geissele I believe). It's pretty slick, and I'd prefer it to a levergun with irons only.

My 1974 vintage Winchester 94 wears a Williams receiver sight.  My Marlin 1895 has a Williams receiver sight and a XS Scout rail wearing a Burris 2x7 Scout scope in Leupold quick detach rings.  It is a very handy setup as the scope can be removed in seconds.

I have an old Tasco 1.5x4 on my Marlin 1895 GBL. I like to be able to see what I’m shooting at. Getting old sucks sometimes.

Most of my Marlins are scoped with Leupold 1.5-5x20s on quick release rings.  My eyes don't do well with factory sights anymore.

IIRC, four of my Winchester Model 94s and one Model 64 have either old Leupold Detacho or Redfield M 294 forward mounted scope systems.

Then there's a 3-9x on the Marlin 1894M .22 mag, one of the 39As has an old Weaver K3, another has a Leupold 2-7x compact and the .45-70 1895 SBL has worn a scout scope but it's off of it just now.

The .300 Savage, .308, .358 and .30-06 levers are scoped, with the exception of a Savage with a vintage tang sight and a Browning Model 1895 Winchester repro with a receiver sight.

I have a long eye relief scout scope on my Rossi 92 for counting points on the deer antlers.  I use the iron ghost ring sights for the actual shot.

In for pics and ideas. I need something for my new 1894 SBL. I’m thinking about my first scout scope. I’d like something with short enough eye relief that it could be mounted just forward of the peep sight. I’m not interested in the models that need to be mounted midway.

Leupold has a IER scout scope in their Freedom line, should have less relief than a regular scout scope.

That looks like the best option after glancing at few online. It seems scout scopes have went out of style. I only found Burris, Leupold and Vortex. I’ll say I wasn’t overly impressed by the Freedom I looked through at Cabelas and a VX2 currently on one of my rifles isn’t exactly wowing optically. I wish that was made in at least the VX3 HD line.

I have an old Glennfield 30-30 with the factory 4x scope and a Marlin 94 .357 with a leupold 1.5-4.
I also have a Rossi .357 with a Bullseye rear sight and another Marlin with factory irons. I prefer scopes.

Somebody should make a sticky about scope mounts.

Ashley performance is the best, if one of the scopes it works with meets your needs there is no better option.

I took my first deer back in the 1960's as a teen.  The rifle was a used Marlin 336C in .30-30.  It wore a Weaver El Paso made 2.5x fixed power scope in Weaver mount and base.  Simple crosshair reticle.  It was a good combination in the day.

Sadly, about 10 years later someone broke into my apartment and stole it.  I still miss it, its simplicity and ruggedness.
