Title says it all. Is there a semi-auto .22LR that will reliably cycle Remington 36 grain subsonic ammunition? I have a Ruger 10/22 and even with upgrades I wouldn't consider it reliable. |

My Glenfield (Marlin) 60 would cycle darn near anything other than CB caps. IIRC, High Standard made 60-80 years ago that were designed to shoot Longs and Shorts as well as LR. |

| I’ve also had great luck with the marlin model 60 for cycling. Unfortunately it’s not a good can host. For a rifle with a can I just went the cheapo bolt ruger american route, guaranteed to work on subs. For a pistol the Taurus TX22 will run on anything. Mine runs subs with a frt no problems. |

| If you can find one, every Remington 550 semi auto i've had fed even CB caps. Trick is to keep the action clean with those. It has a floating chamber like the Colt ACE 22 conversions for the 1911. i would run CB caps through it, then shoot some high speed through it every once in a while to blow the crud out of the floating chamber just to be safe. Should handle subsonic just fine if it will handle CB caps without issue. |

Easiest choice is CCI SV, relatively cheap, suppresses great, and will cycle the 10/22 without question. Next easiest, although expensive, is CCI Suppressor Max (45gr @970fps). |

Most common cheap poor quality American ammo is high velocity The problem with running Remington subsonic is not the gun. I will only shoot Remington 22 ammo if I get it for free it is of such poor quality- same goes for current production Winchester. Even going back to when I shot bullseye pistol competition in the late 70’s or early 80’s, every range had a “ dud can” for 22 that didn’t go off - nearly all the ammo in the can was Remington If you want best performance for consistent accuracy and velocity in subsonic get some eleysk or lapua target ammo. The difference between this and anything American made will astound you |

No issues with my older box of Remington Subsonic but think it’s 40 gr at 1050 fps out of my 10/22 and Skarv can Attached File |

CCI standard velocity and SK Standard plus are subsonic in my rifles and function just fine in semi autos. Most "standard velocity " .22 LR is around 1050 fps from rifle length barrels. CCI also makes a 45 gr HP sub sonic that with the heavier bullet functions just fine in semi autos. The problem with the Remington subsonic is the lighter 36 gr bullet at subsonic speeds means not enough pressure to operate the bolt. Just shoot different ammo. Also running a suppressor should increase your back pressure and make the semi auto function better. |

@Combat_Diver, which barrel and stock is that? |

I have not tried subsonics with my 10/22 but it cycles CCI SV just fine suppressed and unsuppresed with 10” Kidd barrel with just the bolt radius modification. https://1022companion.wordpress.com/2016/01/24/radiusing-the-bolt/ |
| 250th anniversary 10/22 I just got cycled 100% so far with CCI standards, sounded great with a can on it, averaged 1060 FPS. Only cycled 1 or 2 Eley subsonic HP which averaged 950 FPS, short stroked the rest. |

I would definitely try rounding the back of the bolt off for starters. Volquartsen makes a lightweight bolt designed for subs and even says it will cycle the 700fps quiet. https://volquartsen.com/departments/1022_parts/inventory_configurations/7185 There's also been a few different companies that did lightweight action springs. Think Kidd has something. |

| There's an older Remington model (552 I think) that has a floating chamber insert in order to shoot shorts in semi-auto interchangeably with LR. |

The other thing I don't undestand, is how does having a normal (non-low-backpressure) can on the barrel effect cycling for the 10/22? |

Think Kidd has something. Couldn't you drill some blind holes in the factory bolt? People have definitely lightened factory bolts. I think I remember some threads on Rimfire Central many moons ago. They are cheap enough it's not much of a risk. I thought about doing it. I don't know the actual weight differences though and I'd imagine the aluminum bolt is still quite a bit lighter. Few holes might make the difference if you had something right on the edge of running. |

If you get the FireFly bolt, I recommend you only use underpowered ammo like the CCI Quiet 710 FPS in it. Hardened aluminum is not as strong as a normal 10/22 bolt. I have owned it and it works well enough with CCI Quiet 710 FPS. Now I use that ammo strictly in a bolt action gun. |

Maybe 5" or less? In my experience that is incorrect. Just about all I shoot is CCI SV. It is subsonic in all of my rifles and of course in my pistols. I have shot bulk pack Federals (which is high velocity) in my pistols with 5 inches or shorter barrels and that is subsonic. I have shot cases of the cheap Federal through suppressed pistols, wth no sonic crack. Shoot it in longer barrels and it goes supersonic. I miss the good ole days when I could buy it at Walmart for <$20 a box. It has been great blasting ammo when it was cheap. With regards to Remington I have had nothing but problems with that ammo in .22RF. Their subsonic ammo has been pure garbage for me. Their bulk pack is even worse with a lot of duds, inconsistent velocities, erratic accuracy, etc. For the most part I buy CCI Standard Velocity ammo by the case. It has been good to me. |
