So I bought a transferable M16 off of Gunbroker back in the beginning of May of this year. I paid for it and it shipped no problem to my dealer with no problem. The local dealer I use files their forms through Silencer Shop which initially I was happy about since I had a silencer shop account with my fingerprints and picture as well as all my other information. This is where things go south. At the same time I ordered the MG I also ordered a SBS and suppressor. They all got in around the same time. I had no trouble with Silencer Shop certifying the SBS and the suppressor and I got those stamps back in a couple of days. The M16 on the other hand is completely fubared. Silencer Shop has no means to purchase a tax stamp which is still required for the machine gun. I called Silencer Shop and waited on hold with them for like an hour before they picked up. They said the dealer needs to contact customer support. I talked to the dealer and personally witnessed him sit on hold for like an hour and then get disconnected. At this juncture I think I should just file a paper Form 4. I’m going to be out of the country at the end of next month for two months and will probably have spotty internet access so I’d like to get something happening before I go away so maybe it’ll be ready to pick up before I get back from Africa. What a pain in the ass. |

I was using a dealer that used silencer shop but got really tired of waiting for silencershop to do their part. I found a dealer that does their own eforms and use them almost exclusively now. Its pretty nice now, my stuff gets delivered, I show up, we fill out the form 4 in about 10 minutes, and I'm on my way. Does a silencershop dealer have to use them for their forms? Why not just do it on the eforms site directly? |

I don’t deal with silencer shop’s shenanigans. Every time I’ve ever bought from or through silencer shop, I just tell them to form 3 it to my local dealer and give them my local SOT information. I use an inkpad and press my own fingerprint cards at home (free). Then fill out the paper or eform as necessary. |

Maybe 2 years ago I purchased a factory SBR, had it transferred to a local kitchen table FFL. He did all his NFA stuff through SS because "it eliminates all errors" lol. Prior to this I had used SS for a few suppressors so I was in their system already and figured ok. It took two weeks after him receiving it for SS to "get it into their system" to be certified. Then it came time to go over and try to certify the form 4. We don't make it far before there was a "fatal error" in their system. Tried several more times with no luck. Both of us had things to do so he said he will reach out to his rep to try and unfuck things. We do this 2 more times over the next two weeks. I proposed we just do it in eforms, with me either printing myself which I had done several times for F1's or try to get printed cards from SS (was before I had a eft). He was pretty new to NFA items so he really wanted to stick with SS process to "cut out errors". It got escalated to someone higher at SS who also kept getting errors. Now about a month into this SS throws up their hands and said "do you want to do paper". I was pretty annoyed but said ok as long as I got the tax stamp $ refunded which they did. Took a lot longer with paper but I eventually got it, and that was the last time I did anything with SS. My first choice would be to find a competent NFA shop near you that does not use SS. If thats not possible then Id do a paper F4. |
