Canada Post must furniture shop at the same place as the U.S. Post Office. Your post office looks the exact same as mine except for the Post Canada logo. You’re pretty darned awesome ole man! |

I suspect it’s a short op rod spring, I am going to buy him one of Tony Pucci’s stainless garand springs. I have had good luck with them. They’re not extra power just a better spring steel, chrome silicon or something along those lines. Thank you again! The rifle short stroked. It could be the operating rod spring, but it might be the gas cylinder or operating rod. |

That makes perfect sense. Well I need to get it back up here and go through it more thoroughly. The day he brought it here he looked like he was going to snuggle with it that night. I have a Kuhnhausen .30 cal rifle shop manual that has those specs on the piston, the gas cylinder bore and the op rods tab I mentioned in PM. |

Please don’t think my story is a an attack on your expertise, but it sure as heck was humbling to mine: I had a Korean bring back that had no rifling the last three inches of the barrel. It was just brown and rough pitting. I figured I would do my best to smooth it out so it wouldn’t foul up so bad when shooting it. I took Remington bore paste on a patch wrapped around a bronze brush and worked it back and forth. It took a couple hours and stuff just started pouring out the muzzle. I soaked it in copper solvent over night and gave it another 3 hours with the paste and patch. The rifling was there under what LOOKED like shot out rifling. Might be worth a try. |

I already adamantly told him he cannot buy any foreign surplus ammo without checking with me first because that’s what likely caused that bore condition. He’s been shooting my HXP good stuff in my rifle and his the other day. |

We had a couple trips with the Garand and a carbine. He has a hunting rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor and was a little surprised at the 06 recoil. He still was grinning ear to ear though. |

However, he does have a good uncle and in the fullness of time, he will see the error of his ways. |

Bill Ruger in those days insisted on classic styling. The 77s, The No1, the Red Label looked classy. Of course back then there was more wood and class and less polymer. The Ruger 77, the Model 70, the Remington in the classic version of the M700. Hmm a M700 classic in 6.5x55 would be a nice gun. Can you believe I once passed on a M70 featherweight in 6.5x55 for $650 because I couldn’t justify another deer rifle. I still regret that dumbness years later. |

There’s very little “bad” surplus ammo out there anymore. |

My experience.... 1. careful match reloads, usually with 168s 2. HXP 3. My reloads with either HXP or LC cases and a virgin surplus USGI bullet. The few Hornady fmjs I ran were much better than GI. 4. LC but admittedly most of my LC was Talon repacked for CMP, Talon broke down belts of U.S. surpluses M2 Ball machine gun ammo where dispersion is a good thing for a machine gunner’s beaten zone. Even the boxed up machine gun ammo wasn’t bad. The brass QC was pretty bad with a fair amount of off center flash holes. Those really break your rhythm. Some were so far off center I’d crimp them with pliers and drop them in the recycle scrap yard bucket. A case isn’t worth stopping the show with damaged depriming stems. I learned quick to use a cheap Lee universal depriming die. |

| I am shooting surplus corrosive stuff, I just clean really well afterwards. I don’t think he’s going to make that barrel any worse. Once you get the new barrel installed, I might baby it, but as long as you clean well it shouldn’t be a problem. |

If he is going to buy corrosive to shoot cheaply now is the time to do so before an overhaul. My only real experience is Mosin ammo. I had some Romanian Silver tip and some Bulgarian Heavy Ball. You needed to be on your toes cleaning that salt out. One day I shot it at the range. It was hot and humid and after we were done we went out for lunch. I didn’t clean for five or so hours after. There was some very light flash rust starting already. It certainly drove home the old military policy of cleaning a gun three times after shooting back in the days of corrosive ammo. I know a fellow that bought a new Russian M91. He shot it and stuck in the closet. I cannot remember if he cleaned it inadequately or not at all. Months later he saw he rusted his barrel. |

He sure is. I am still flabbergasted. He may channel the spirit of John Cantius. Now I need my nephew and the rifle back to go over everything in better detail. Well he’s off on a jaunt this weekend to the reenactor event at the armor museum in Massachusetts. A delay but I’ll allow this one. It’s supposed to be a big event with the tanks and trucks out and about. I am a touch jealous. |

| Just took mine out of the safe to dust it off, receiver is actually marked Springfield Armory, too bad my regular shooter is marked CAI, but at least it shoots. |

Barrel was worn out, op spring was in three pieces, and the stock looked like someone had used it to hit rocks tossed in the air. Got a very good barrel, a new spring, and a much better used stock. Great fun. |

But with a brand new barrel and new wood it looks just as good or better than my service grade on the right https://i.imgur.com/hczlHHi.jpg The CMP deals aren’t that good any more but they are still significantly better than what OPs nephew got. The nephew would be better off returning the garand and then using the money to order from the CMP. He would have money left over to buy a sling, bayonet and ammo. |

The difference was back then they were dirt cheap so you could just re barrel them and still come out pretty well. Now, pretty much all non CMP Garands are badly over priced, and unfortunately way too many people buy up the CMP Garands just to flip them at a profit (which should be both illegal and prosecuted). I bought a Blue Sky when they were coming in. Paid $280 for it. The barrel was toast. Took it to Champions Choice in LaVergne, Tn. Gene Barnett picked up dropped off M1's for barreling and other work. Bought a Douglas M1 short chambered barrel from them. Gene Barnett barreled it and finish chambered it. I think I paid around $200 for the barrel and $100 for the installation and headspacing. Had it back in about a week. Parkerized all the metal at work. Bought a chocolate laminate stock set from Boyds and bedded the rifle in it. Used it for 1000 yd matches at the AEDC in Tullahoma, Tn for a long time. Eventually put it into a new walnut stock set. Been that way ever since. It's still a great shooting rifle. |
I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.
