A 50-cal steel ball at 500 fps isn't something I want to stand in front of. If you're choosing what to stand behind to stop a threat, seems like a 45-cal lead hollow point moving at >800 fps would be better.  Especially if they are regulated the same-ish. That said, you do you.

it says "up to 450fps" but doesn't say that's with the steel ammo. My guess is that's with plastic. I can't imagine the steel ones move that fast

There is a local to me guy who mods them for 24+ Joules of energy, he also sells the modded guns on ebay.
