What are y’all running on your M1A’s? The mount I got with the gun is garbage. I do not want to use the scout mount either. I want to run a LPVO or traditional scope and sm looking for the best possible solution. Thanks! |
| When I had a M1A many moons ago, I had some heavy-duty screw on the left side mount, it worked and was tough but had a bit of weight to it. Not sure on many other options just short of getting it drilled and taped for rings, but hell I had mine 25 plus years ago so no real idea what is available now. |

Way back in the day I had a first generation Springfield Armory scope mount on my M1A Supermatch. It had the single screw on the side, but if you understood how to properly fit it, it worked fine, held a zero and had a repeatable zero. 95% of the complaints about those original mounts were from folks who did not understand or follow the fitting process. On my current M1A I use the SA Gen 4 aluminum mount and with the two screw design using a block replacing the clip guide it’s arguably more durable in holding a zero. But again, like any M1A mount it has to be properly fitted. If you plan to suppress an M1A the advantage of a mount like the SA Gen 4 that uses a block in place of the clip guide is that it functions as an effective gas deflector with no need to use the deflector from a blank firing adapter and modifying it to fit under a scope mount.

+1 on the original gen SAInc mount. I was too timid on the fitting and it would shoot loose in a mag or two. You really needed to beat the soft aluminum mount in to the steel receiver to custom swage fit it. That helped a lot. My only mount that I have now is a Smith Enterprises that I got on a close out sale decades ago. Weaver cross slots not Picatinny but it is a three point; the big screw on the L side, the stripper clip guide replacement anchor and a tension screw on the front ring. If I had to buy one today I’d look at Sadlak first. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.
ARMS 18 is great if you can find one. Very low mount, make sure your extraction and ejection clear the mount. As said, secondary market is about the only place to find them and it will not be cheap, most likely. Bassett low pic rail mount is very solid and reliable, as long as you follow the mounting instructions or use a torque limiter.  Those are the two I have. The Brookfield and Sadlak mounts are supposed to be really good. The VLTOR CASV rail is good too, but hard to find. I'm not sure they are still making them.

I've used all of them from Sadlak, to LRB's M25 receiver. I recommend the Bassett low pictinney mount. Especially for out of spec SAI receivers. There are more robust mounts, but I like the ease of install, the return to zero, and the fact that the stripper guide is retained. |

The price was right on them. Yes, the site is up. However people have been having calls and emails go unanswered when they try to check on unfulfilled orders. I just sold a spare Bassett mount to another member because he couldn’t get a response from Bassett. |

This was a few years back but she also said they’d gladly fit a mount if I had any issues. |

I started with an Springfield 3rd gen, didn't care for it, way way too tall, but it was robust and I did like the big knobs for mounting. Really didn't use it much. Picked up the Sadlak aluminum Airborne, a very high quality mount, still tall, but no where near as bad as the Springfield. Had issues with cases getting stuck between the mount and op rod. I did like this one better, but didn't get to do a whole lot with it, I lost it and the Springfield as well as the scope I was using at the time, they were in my car when it was stolen. I now have a later A.R.M.S 18. I really like this one for how low it is, I have to remove the rear sight aperture to mount my scope with the low rings I am using, but that way I can actually get a semi decent cheek weld without using a add on riser, however it still really could use a riser for best results. This one also will stick the cases, and I did try to clip coils off the ejector spring to change the ejection angle, but still need to work with that some more. I actually still need to finish my testing with this mount to get a valid idea of accuracy and if my groups shift. I much prefer using the iron sights on this rifle over a scope, so I have a bad habit of putting the mount on, doing a short range session or two with G.I. spec ammo and the removing it and trying again a few years later and then promptly removing it yet again. |

I went with steel partly because of the above, but also because the aluminum ones have been OOS everywhere for a while. I think the steel ones are now as well until they do another run. I had seen somewhere that he was thinking about doing another run of titanium which is intriguing to me, but I'm quite happy with my steel. If you go with an Airborne version (assuming another run comes out) that will save you some weight.

I met her at the gun show a few years ago and she was having a cousin in Spicewood machine the mounts then and was still offering to custom machine mounts for out of spec receivers. Don’t know what the deal is now though. Have a friend from Dripping Springs that knew her dad and can remember when he would sight in rifles right in town, lol. Any more word on these? |
