Dang it.  I don't need another project but after a bit of research and not a little bit of just trusting my luck to the wind, I have ordered this:

It's a bullpup chassis kit for the 10/22.  It's from a company called SRU Precision which is run by an American dude (of Asian descent) who appears to have direct ties to Taiwan, R.O.C.  He's been doing AR-15/BRN-180 chassis systems for a bit..  This is their 10/22 chassis system.  This is the first time I have seen a 10/22 bullpup kit that didn't look like ass.  It is complex but well engineered and can even accommodate left handed, third party 10/22 receiver systems.

I went to get a "junker", OLD (I hate any and all Ruger guns made after the old man died.) 10/22 today and accidentally ended up with a minty Deluxe to replace the one I mistakenly sold when I was a broke teenager....so, ummm...OOPS?  Anyhow, the hunt will continue next weekend.

Anyyyyhowww.....this may also be my ticket into suppressors as these will fit barrels over 1.000 inches in diameter.  In fact, I want to say 1.2 in the nominal allowable...but don't quote me.  I think an 18 inch integrally suppressed barrel will be sweeeeet on this.  Provided it works well.

Anyhow, here is a link to the site but I will leave it cold:

https://www.sru-precision.com/sruna-22

Does anyone have any experience with anything SRU related???

Here is a sample from the internets (not my photo, obviously) of what one can do with this:

That looks way better than the desert tactical kit I had.

I bought it hoping it would be a handy suppressor host. Unfortunately the gas from the ejection port when shooting suppressed drifting into my nose and eyes made it unbearable. (Was using a DA mask. Maybe a flow through .22 can would be better).

I will be looking forward to your review!

I have been eyeballing that kit too. Problem is I don’t have a 10/22 yet so I have to fork over a bit if money at once, lol.

I’ve been running their AR bullpup kit pretty hard. It is solid. I can’t imagine the 22 kit would be any different.

Well...don't be me and immediately buy one you AREN'T going to use in it!  LOLOL....I still have to go buy another.

There was another at the store, a beat up old standard carbine....THEY WANTED MORE FOR THAT THAN THE MINT DELUXE I BOUGHT!!!!

I am glad you like their AR kit!!!

The main reason I got it, besides it looking pretty nice, is that you can actually just field strip the gun to clean it...it's not like that gay ass Desert Tech or a Muzzle Lite kit where you seal the gun up into a shell till the end of time.  Seriously!  WTF?

Thank you for the video.

Here is a video from a very clumsy fellow giving a general description of the system.

He does give it a pretty decent going over:

Okay!  I have a donor 10/22 made from before the Ruger 10/22 became the Rubber 10/22.  Nice crisp trigger on this one!

I also scored some simple Amazon flip ups....(not a fan but not because of the sights, themselves) and a BX 15 mag and some various grips.

I also have some simple optics on the way including a plain dot and a Saturn Reticle optic.

So, about the sights.  This is EXACTLY like my AUG and, to a lesser degree, my Hellion.  Like the AUG this just doesn't have enough rail space for a guy with 55 year old eyes to get a clear focus on the front sight.

You can see that there is quite a bit of wasted space in front of the front sight and a bit behind the rear sight, too.

I am DYING to put the action in BUT I need to order one more thing next week and that is the barrel.  I am gonna whip this little carbine apart and clean it.  It almost seems a shame to even take it apart as a donor but I cannot mess up my others as they are all super special to me in one way or another.

Like this one that replaces the 10/22 Deluxe I mistakenly sold as a teenager.  I just could NOT tear this one apart.

Anyhow.  I will have either a Summit or Volquartsen Carbon Fiber tensioned barrel on the way shortly.  It's NOT for the accuracy, per se, but for the stiffness and lightness.

Okay.  This is the preliminary assembly.  Going verbatim to the instructions on the website,  This goes together well.  It is a bit fiddly at first BUT as you go along it gets easier and easier.

I have not torque anything down yet as I have a barrel and other accoutrements on the way.  This was to "get the feel".

I am liking this so far.  Butt heavy as you would expect but it has a cool feel.  Best grip feel of all is the more vertical "Kung Fu" grip by DF Co.  I will be going with that.

Safety was good and solid but a bit  "mushy".  That is likely due to the polymer tumbler.  I have a Magpul unit with a steel tumbler I will replace it with when my black Kung Fu grip comes in.

The sights are "okay" but like other bullpups the sight radius is too short for my aging eyes.  Too, these are functional but too bulky...they are coming off.  Magpul steel ones will be going on.  They are the only flippies that are slim enough to work with the profile of the gun.

So...a work in progress but with potential!!!

The trigger is interesting.  Now, remember, this is a preliminary assembly so I haven't done my Teflon hose down nor have I Loctited or even torqued everything down.  So, it is still a dry system.  No Teflon, no oil, no nothing.

That being said, the trigger is interesting so far.  The original carbine was in fantastic condition.  Equally as nice as the Deluxe I got last week.  The trigger pull was a VERY nice, crisp pull of about 4 pounds to 4.5 pounds.  THAT was a surprise.  Maybe not so much for a late 1990s gun....but it was a nice trigger for a sporting carbine.

Once assembled into the gun, the trigger is STILL crisp!  BUT it is about 6 to 7 pounds now.  Again, remember this is a dry system. Nothing is oiled or lubed yet as the whole thing needs to come back apart for the barrel and then I have to put the action back in an add the alignment grub screws and do a full alignment of the action in the upper chassis.

Once I have that done I will find my trigger pull gauge and get a value on the trigger pull.

BY THE WAY:  I have decided against an integral suppressor because once I get the stock and barrel setup in the action and aligned, I would not be able to maintain the suppressor without yanking the receiver and barrel.  No thanks.  Kinda bums me out but it is what it is.

So, this is the barrel I have on the way:

The OAL with the comp is 18.5 or something,  Jussst enough so stick out of the front end about 1 inch.  Perfect!  Maybe I can find a nice can for this.  We shall see.

Well...this took a turn for the worse. It's nothing I can't fix.

Volquartsen sent me the wrong barrel.
Thanks a lot, Pals! Fortunately, it doesn't matter as it is too short ( STILL!) anyway. Even with the comp on it, it just almost makes the end of the upper receiver. Sigh. THAT was my fault. Now I need ANOTHER 10/22 for that barrel. Sigh again.

The safety feels GREAT. Annnddd, it doesn't work. The gun will fire on safe with the Magpul safety. Factory safety is going back in for now.  It's good enough.

The alignment screws are juuusssssst long enough to align the action but I wish I had about 2 to 3mm more length on the,. Luckily, SRU publishes all of their screw data so I am off to order more weeeee little doggie set screws.

I am going to order a Summit 18.5 inch barrel this weekend and swap that out.

TIP: when installing the alignment screws, put them all in very loose and get the gun fully installed into the stock and make sure everything works and THEN loosen up the action screw and the top locking screw and THEN do the barrel alignment.

Sigh,  still waiting on Volquartsen to get my barrel to exchange it for the right one.

Also waiting for Summit to ship a barrel I ordered 5 days ago.

Meanwhile, all of my little ebay doo dads that I ordered on Sunday night will all be here by Friday.

Also ordered a rubber trigger group as I want to drop in steel components into the rubber group to see if I can drop some weight but not sacrifice the trigger pull too much.

Hilariously, this crazy project has a better trigger than my AUG (not bad for a bullpup) or my Hellion!!!  (terrible trigger even for a bullpup)

Progress has been made!

Since I had to completely re-think the barrel situation ( 18.5 inch Summit Carbon Fiber Tension Sleeved barrel on the way ) I visited the safety situation.

I put a 2mm button head screw into the trigger body and then fit, trimmed and fit the screw till the safety and trigger just fit into the gun.  NOW I have a working safety!!!  To boot, that steel Magpul tumbler made for a super positive feel!!!

I next ordered a full plastic (ewwww) trigger group from eBay.  Now, I must say, the current plastic is MUCH better than the shit from 2010 or 2011.  I mixed and matched parts between the old and new trigger groups to give me a balance of weight and a good trigger pull .  It worked REALLLLLLLY well.  I was more than impressed.  I also added some Magpul M-Lok covers  ( a few of which I had to trim to fit odd shaped areas) and that turned out great, too!!!!

I have some more OD green ones on the way so the bottom matches the left and right sides.

So....I am at the point that I am waiting for the new Volquartsen barrel and the Summit to arrive.  The Volquartsen comp is going on the Summit barrel.  I will contour as necessary as Summit barrels are a bit smaller at the muzzle than the breech.  I am not sure about Volquartsen.  The Volquartsen barrel will go on another project.

Next, I need some Kydex to make a good cheek piece.  Dark metal and the Arizona sun do NOT mix.

Enjoying this so far.  It's a fun project and it sure is nice to have a bullpup 10/22 that you can field strip easily for cleaning.  NOTE:  once you have the gun set up, the receiver and barrel are semi permanently locked to the upper BUT you can easily remove the trigger group and bolt group for cleaning.

Summit barrel installed!  OEM aluminum V Bloc...BROKEN!  LOLOL...I thought they were steel!  Well, I have a steel on on the way and the bottom half of the original is holding the barrel in place while I do other things.

The whole thing will need to come apart at least once more as I have heating a kydex sheet to the extruded upper to make a cheek piece this weekend.

Here is the Summit 18.5 inch barrel.  Comp will be in tomorrow which will extend the barrel nicely past the end of the upper.

The barrel is hidden to almost all but the bearer of the weapon.  I really like that.  When I see that barrel in there, I just smile!

I sent them an email asking them to develop a similar kit for the Ruger PC 9mm carbine. It being pretty much a 9mm 10/22, it should be doable. And a 9mm bullpup that took Glock mags would be awesome.

Fingers crossed.

Finally made another cheek piece.  Much happier with the feel.  I have some really thin, flat top hex screws on the way as I don't like the flat top screw on this either.  I am getting there, though!!  Now there is no feel of metal on my face which, in Arizona, can be a hot proposition.

Then I went out for a test fire with one of our members as an addition test subject.

This is my text from another forum.  Too lazy to write this over again.

You know, of course, of the three random mags I grabbed, that the first one was POS, right? ( of course it was of newer Ruger production, not something from the 70s or 80s )

Lucky for me, I took 3 mags!

So, the range was packed, smoky, LOUD and HOT. My glasses kept fogging up and I have an astigmatism.

Regardless....I was able to keep nice groups at only about 10 or 15 yards ( because I cannot see the diamond on the target beyond that ) which isn't bad for a guy who is nearly blind and in a box full of lead fumes and Hy-Skor 700X smoke. Probably some Trail Boss in there, too!

So, the first mag was bunk. Had to toss it back in the back. The other 10 rounder and the BX 15 did really good BUT you have to keep your wrist away from the mag body as you can induce malfunctions because the mag has a bit of left to right wiggle in the chassis. If I was out in the desert shooting and not in a 2.5 foot wide box, this would not have been an issue.

So, I fired several 10 and 15 round groups. On the head shot group I was playing with different hold under and then went back to my standard hold. This gun is only laser sighted...I need to go for distance now. I think I need a 1-6 power LPVO. The smeared red dot (and the bullpup trigger) are holding me back.

The little silhouette on the top left was my buddy shooting both right and left handed. There are ten rounds in those groups. (total...not each)

Next week it is out to the field for some fun shooting with this.

I have also contacted the company and I am going to hit up their US rep and give him some ideas that could take this from something great to something fantastic.

Wish me luck.

Took it out to the desert yesterday.

Had a GREAT time with it.

Because the action was new, it took some time to break it in. Also, because I am running more of a match chamber ( I am running the Summit Carbon Fiber tensioned barrel) , loading was very finicky with some mags but not others.  What I learned was that my older "black follower" mags with broken in springs and, oddly, the BX15 mag ran the easiest.

Mind you, I have an astigmatism and, while far from blind, red dots are a smear to me so when I finished dialing it in at 50, I had my dad shoot it to confirm some semblance of a zero and then started breaking in the gun.  After just a few mags of HV, the gun really started coming into its own and I was chasing cans all over the place with it.

Also, the PWS BDE .22 made running standards a breeze.  The back pressure really helped as, again, the action is a classic 90s action in almost NIB condition.

Even with a better extractor, the match chamber doesn't like to eject live cartridges very easily.  I am going to do a couple mods to see if I can improve it a bit.  Spent round extraction was nearly flawless.  I did have a stovepipe with some crappy M222 but that was without the can on it, as I recall.  Again, it's M222 which is shit.  Most of my ammo was CCI and Aguila.  M222 ran best out of the BX 15 mag.  BTW: the BX 15 was the best performing mag once it had been cycled a few times.  As were older, black follower, 10 rounders that were broken in decades ago.  Loading red follower mags to 8 rounds also seemed to work fairly well.  I will test that more.

Anyhow, once I was really comfortable with the gun, I was just deadly with it!  I was chasing cans all over the place and hitting them "on the run", too!

When setting up the gun, aligning the chassis is the hard part.  You want to do that right and you should be not only mechanically inclined but also able to read instructions.  Like a lot of stuff these days, instructions are found online only.  Take your time.  Having a laser bore sighter is also a very handy tool.

Standard velocity ammo with the can on it sounds great.  HV has such a sonic crack that you doesn't notice the muzzle blast mitigation very much.  The BDE can is going to live with my P322 and I am getting a rugged Oculus .22 K for this gun.  It will look better.  Fatter but not too fat.  The BDE is a bit skinny for this gun, looks-wise.

I really need to put a magnifying optic on this to see what it is capable of, though the trigger ( like all bullpups ) will be a limiting factor.

Speaking of the trigger.  It's not too damn bad!  I "built" a "Mexican Match" style trigger by using components from a class aluminum trigger group combined with components from a new, plastic group.  This is actually the very best trigger of all of my bull pups at around 4.5 pounds ( maybe 5 ) but almost crisp!  It is very predictable!  Believe it or not, I used a (new) plastic housing to save weight and that worked nicely.  The internals are all metal and I actually used the hammer from the plastic group as it is simpler and lighter than the old school hammer.

So, there are some thing I am going to talk to SRU about this week.  I am already in contact with their US rep.  I want to keep that close to my chest as I don't know what ideas they may or may not like or which they may or may not implement.  My work with Auto Mag has me very reluctant to ever talk too early about anything.  If I was closed mouthed then, I am even more so now.

Anyhow, here are a couple boring pics of the gun that I took out in the field.

Here are my TLDR takeaways:

Love this thing!  Takes time to set up and break in but once done it is incredibly shootable and very easy to maintain.

A note:  The barreled receiver becomes a semi permanent part of the chassis once assembled BUT that does NOT prevent field stripping.  The trigger group and bolt can be taken out and the gun cleaned very easily.

I wish it was slimmer, especially up front. If right after the optics rail the entire thing dropped down to a 1.35" ID rail I'd be stoked. A lower height 12oclock rail than your optics is nice anyway

I run the HTA Mod 1 bull pup kit, allows me to run a Charger barrel with can to shorten down the OAL and keep it all within the stock housing. And it accepts the binary trigger kit as well.

Well!  Thanks to this gun and my SIG 322, I am on a can kick all of the sudden!

So.  The gun runs REALLY well with BX-15 mags.  I did a little experimental mod where I put a patch of Gorilla tape on each side of the BX mag as it seemed a bit loose.  This mag runs 100 percent.

My ten rounders are really hit and miss and I feel it is how they lock into the gun.  May do the same thing to a couple of those.

If that works, the I am gonna reverse this and try tape inside the mag well on both sides and if THAT works, I will order some carbon fiber pre-preg and custom fit the mag well.

Of course, now I can't find BX-15s ANYWHERE....so I am working on a sample size of 1.

Anyhow, I got out to the pistol range to test the new Stealth Additive Works "Klik" suppressor.moderator and the Rugged "Occulus" in the K configuration.

The Klik is a 3D printed, Titanium flow through unit that works more as a moderator than a real suppressor, IMO.  HOWEVER, with standards and subs, it turned the report into a low tone "thump".  I really like that.  I am not chasing every dB like a lot of folks.  I just like toning the gun down in many instances.

Now, the Occulus K...that was GREAT.  It's nearly as quiet as my PWS BDE .22.  Looks so much better on the gun, however.  The Klik looks REALLY cool and still provided a nice amount of back pressure to run standards, subs and CCI Suppressor.  Even with Mini Mags, the Kilk really kills the report of the cartridge and all you have to deal with is the sonic crack of the bullet.  The "crack" of the report is turned into a low tone "whump" or "thump".

The feel of this chassis is outstanding and with all of the mods so far, it is turning out GREAT!.

I did a mag dump over the hood of my dad's Jeep last weekend and, squeezing the trigger as fast as I could, I pull two mags worth into a group that would fit inside my palm print at 100 yards!!!!   I was just gankin' the thing like a Tim Waltz and it was glorious.

Oh, also, the Tailhook extractor has been GREAT.  I did have issues with unfired CCI .22 Suppressor not wanting to hand eject even with the Tailhook but I did a just teeny bit more work on the Extractor and she runs like a top now if I get a misfire.

Speaking of misfires, I need to do a proper "roll pin" mod and add a roll pin through the bolts, right above the front of the firing pin so it cannot pivot upwards.  This pin likes to drift up occasionally resulting in a failure to fire.  I mean no strike at all. (by proper, I mean drilling a hole above and perpendicular to the firing pin to add a cross pin, not that stupid practice of jamming a roll pin above the firing pin, parallel to it.

This gun is also a bit sensitive to dirt due to the match chamber BUT there may be some other issues in the receiver I need to address.  Not sure yet.

Regardless....this thing not only rocks...it feels like a BRICK!  Like you could butt-stroke a dude to the head with it.  I really love this platform.

I don't want anything to do with the BX-25s.  Too darned long.  I think some of my functional issues are related to the fact that this gun is a complete mix-master.  I have ideas on fixing that.  Also, the match barrel works for the gun and against it at the same time.  That tight chamber is better suited to match ammo, even though it is a Bentz.  She can sure shoot with consistent ammo, though.

That being said, I ran a BUNCH of stupid hot Power Point through it today and that seemed to have loosened it up quite a bit.  Also the occasional misfire seems to be caused by a floating firing pin which I am going to have my smith fix by a PROPER cross pinning over the top and front of the firing pin.

Here it is shooting the Rugged Occulus in the "K" (short) format and then the Stealth Additive Works' "Klik" which is something like a can and a muzzle break all in one.  Like a super moderator.

Now that I’m getting into cans and have my first .22 can in process (as I somehow expect there will be more), I realized I don’t actually have a threaded 10/22.  And looking at the various options, I realized that a Form 4’d 10/22 would be awesome in this setup.

Thank you both for the video review!

You bet.  Be warned these are kinda of "project guns".  You really need to be mechanically inclined to set them up.  Once they are set up they are so much fun and so much easier to maintain than any or the other bullpup kits on the market.

That stood out to me.

Many years ago I had a HTA90/22 kit, and while it was fun, it was a bear to maintain.

The SRU kit’s easier access has caught my eye.

Decisions, decisions.

@ OP and Bluedog 82,  thanks for the write up, I (don't) really need another project, currentl;y working on a chassis for my tx22.

OP- can you tell us what plastic trigger you went with and which exact parts were combined.

Been looking for something different and it so happens that I won a 1022 door prize at a gunshow.

@bmarshall1:

Forgive me for taking so long to respond.

I was using a standard plastic Ruger shell with a mix of Ruger stock and BX components.  It didn't work very well.  I went back and rebuilt the original aluminum housing that went with the original action and used the same mix of stock and BX components.  Works MUCH MUCH better BUT that match barrel has kind of a tight chamber and doesn't tolerate dirt very well.  I need to get int this thing again and do some polishing and clearancing.  I also need to pin the firing pin down to help with occasional failures to fire.   This doesn't have anything to t do with the SRU shell, of course.
