What are your "fun" bolt guns to shoot? (Page 2 of 3)
| Turkish Mauser in 8mm cut down to 17 inches, will still ring steel at 100 and 200 yards. I had planned to change out the rear sight leaf for a scope mount and mount a scout scope, but haven’t yet. At 5-15 rounds a range session it’s going to take me forever to go through a spam can of 8mm. |

My "fun to shoot" bolt gun is this Sako L-579 action based custom build. The barrel is a Douglas Premium sporter profile chambered in 6mm Remington. That is a now rare almost obsolete, chambering. It is a 7x57 case necked down to 6mm. The case holds a bit more powder than .243 Win, so it can be loaded a bit hotter if you handload. The barreled action originally in the white, has been black chrome plated and polished to a mirror finish. The stock is a nice piece of claro walnut with real hand-cut checkering. It pushes 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip varmint bullets at 4150 fps. Scope is a Japanese made Weaver 3-10x mil/mil with mil-dot reticle.

The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

CZ trail 300 blk. Super lightweight very fun to shoot with the MP5 Style telescoping stock, amazing trigger and stupid quiet suppressed with Subs. I really like that it takes regular pattern AR mags which are easy to find in just about any capacity.

Pure fun bighorn origin action Bartlein 223 barrel from bugholes trigger tech diamond Impossible to keep a smile off Your face I have several cool bolt guns and have owned a multitude of other very nice ones. But this is the one i wish i could have owned my entire life.

It ain't much, but it's what I got CZ 457 22lr trainer model. It's fun shooting those tangent sights at 200 yds Ruger American predator in 223 with a scope 3 times the cost of the rifle on top. I'd like a 6.5 creedmoor for a PRS rifle someday. Seems like a really neat caliber |

CZ 600 Lux in 5.56 Didn't buy it to hunt with, nor any specific benchrest or bullseye shooting. Just wanted a classy, wood stocked, iron sighted bolt-action in a cheap, common caliber to plink with at the range.  The wood is gorgeous, but I really need to bed the action. Alot of side to side slop between the action and the stock. Finally took the time to figure out how I'm going to go about it due to CZ's weird design of how the action mounts. Now I just need to sit down and do it. |
| Spanish 8x57 98 Mauser barreled action in a cheap sporter stock, with an old Redfield peep sight. Load a 170 Hornady over 37 gr of 4895. The mil spec load must be full of dynamite, my loads give me the equivalent of a 32 Win special. Works for me.. |

I handload for it so factory ammo availability is not an issue. It shoots tiny groups with match components from the little 55gr Nosler BTs all the way up to 100-105gr hunting and match bullets. The 1:9 twist is too slow for the more fashionable longer, heavier bullets favored for long range shooting. 103gr ELD-X is a laser at 3000 fps. |

I like this Remington 700 for distances out to about 700 yards. All of these are fun as military trainer type rifles, but I prefer the Winchester Model 52A at the bottom.  For long range .22 LR shooting, I prefer this Bergara:  This Anschutz 64 match is my preferred 3P rifle.

Seriously.... Attached File Doesn't matter whether it's an old milsurp, custom bolt gun, or old beat up .22. I love 'em all. Since I bought my first rifle (Marlin 25...complete with crappy Tasco 4x scope) I've been hooked. Semis are great too, but there's something about the simplicity of a bolt gun that's just so satisfying. Some current and past faves... Past... No4 MkII Faz. Bought still in mummy wrap. Swede Mauser. Still had lead armory "tape" and unfired when I bought it. Workmanship was incredible GAP SCLE group buy rifle...say no more Remington PSS (both .308 and .223) gently "massaged" by Hart rifles. CZ 452 Varmint Current... Howa 16" .308  RAR 7.62x39  Howa Mini .223  Howa Mini .300 BO  Lantac Straight-Pull .300 BO build  |

All of them. Lately though, I picked up one of those folding Rossi single shots (Rossi LWC) in 300bo, No need for it, but hey, it was a gun for $278. I'm going to impluse buy anything at that price.  Very accurate, incredibly light and the folding stock is not as flimsy as it appears. I put a Burris 4x on it. No subs yet but the can works well on 135 gr supersonics. |

But for show, I am known to shoot reloads with H335 powder out of a Mosin Nagant. My good barreled one is stupid accurate with that load, and even my REMF-grade M38 keeps at around 2.5 MOA with it. And c'mon ... a 6 foot fireball and artillery-like report.  |

This one is fun, too. Remington 541S Custom Sporter, circa 1973 or so. It is topped with a current production Vortex 6-24x50 Diamondback scope with side focus parallax down to about 15 yards, appropriate for rimfire. First focal plane "tree" reticle in MOA with accurate tracking MOA turrets. The glass begins to poop out by 300 yards, but I can't dope wind at that distance with .22LR anyway. Plenty good for 50, 100 and 200 yard bench. This is a target action with a match grade sporter profile barrel and walnut stock. Trigger is "right now" 1 lb. It is accurate enough to tell differences in lot numbers on Eley Tenex and Black Box Match, or Lapua Center-X. Harris benchrest height bipod, but I usually shoot from rest and rear bag.  |

| Surprised no one has said Ruger 77/357 or 44, very quick bolt, lightweight, fairly inexpensive ammo that is super light recoiling, fun guns |

Another fun bolt gun, my Remington 514 single-shot .22LR. My dad bought it for me when I was about 11-12 years old. That would have been 1961-62. It was used. I was so proud. My first real gun. I still have it after 65 years. Thousands of rounds over the years, plinking, casual target practice, rabbits, squirrels. Accuracy is pretty decent despite the poor trigger by most standards. I didn't know any better and loved it. Still fun to shoot. We had it drilled and tapped for Weaver bases. The scope is a period-correct Japanese 4x 1" tube Tasco that I added when in high school a few years later. I did refinish the stock many years ago. Otherwise, it is as my dad gave it to me. I will pass this on to a grandchild.  |

The most fun I've ever had with a bolt action rifle was ground hog hunting with my Rem. M700 VS .223 Rem. For me, making clean kills on ground hogs after my buddies have said, "No way you can hit that groundhog from here." Or, "I've been after that sucker all morning and he won't show enough of his head long enough to take a shot. You won't get him either." Oh, clean kills = head shots. My M700 taught me that if I missed (I did, twice in three years) it was my fault, not the rifle. I used to really like shooting my Rem. 03A4, too. Busting 1 gallon milk jugs of water at 500 yds. was always fun. |
