Am I missing something or is this basically just back to the original A3 again?

Is this Steyr admitting the A3-M1 was idiotic and pointless? I refused to buy one with that goofy hump right in the way of the optic rail.

Also where is the 9mm version now? Didn't they just release another 9mm AUG only for it to be gone already?

Why is Steyr like this? How do they even sell anything?

That's exactly what it is but with lower quality and less good fit and finish. I would far prefer an A3 SA.

Pretty much

They're coming out with another version eventually that's going to use Glock mags.

They never go full tilt boogie on anything. Every one yells they want this and that and then they do a run and it just sits there. Everyone want's this and that but they don't actually buy when it comes out.

Do You blame them for being cautious.

Look at the 40th it took years to clear inventory. Only when they are no longer available do people want them again. When Steyr comes out with something You better buy or You may never see it again.

It sure looks like it’s just the A3. But I disagree re: the A3M1 being a bad iteration. There is room for both the M1 and M2. The M1 for an updated legacy type rifle, the M2 for people who want to make their AUG handle more like an AR.

This is very true. Altough the new 9mm kits went quick! M2 has little interest for me and when they started to sell the stg77 scopes the anniversary edition lost some of its appeal. I’m hoping Steyr will start to innovate again. Even maybe give an optics ready pistol this decade.

Steyr needs to incorporate an x95 type mag release as was done by Thales on their nato mag variant of the F90.

The A3 M2 is basically an A3, except that the charging handle slot has been machined for the original square A1 style charging handle, and that slot is also cut so that when the charging handle is all the way forward you can fold it inward and flush with the receiver like on the Aussie EF88.

You can actually tell the A3 M2 receivers are just A3 M1 receivers with that front lug cut off by some minor vestigal features where the top rail goes.

I wish there was a shop that would convert the M1 receivers into M2s. It would be really nice to be able to get rid of the useless sling mount and have an easier time having a rail system that was actually modern. They didn’t even make the sling mount limited rotation… It’s always made me angry.

I remember seeing a post from a Steyr AUG facebook forum where there was a shop offering to mill off the M1 hump, but I do not recall what shop it was.  If I find the post I will repost the info here.  It honestly should not be too hard to do with a mill.

I've owned  901 thru 903, several A3, many A3 M1 and A3 M2.

There is space and purpose for all of them.

For the person that just wants a solid performing AUG, the A3 M1 is an outstanding firearm.  I completely disagree with it being a "bad" version.

Until Steyr sells a version with an extended monolithic receiver (bolt on extended rails are *meh*) everything A3 iteration is basically the same (A 901 with a pic rail top).  The rest is minor.

What exactly is the difference between the A3 M1 and the A3 M2?

Is this just a way to get away from the stock cracking issues?

[#15]
The a3 m1 has a hump or backwards facing hook at the front of the receiver that makes it difficult if not impossible to put a decent rail forward of that position.

The one and only real benefit of the a3m1 is that it integrate nicely with the retro style scope because that's part of what it was designed for.

The A3 essay the one before the ATM one had a continuous flat rail that provided many more and better rail options including extended rails.

The a3m2 is basically just returning to the a3 sa.

However the a3sa has far higher quality and is more sought after for that reasonable.

One nice little detail on the m2 is the ability to fold the chg hndl into the receiver at the front. However that means that it requires a different charging handle from the a3m1 and is incompatible with the aftermarket stuff.

Have they fixed the stock cracking issues? My A3 M1 was made right during covid and is one of the potential affected stocks due to the date of manufacture. I love the AUG, but I'm leery of mine. I'm wondering if I can get a replacement stock now. I don't care if they replace the stock once I'm dead because my stock broke during a home invasion.

I have not heard of any stocks cracking as of more recently, it does appear they have fixed the issue.

They will replace the stock under warranty if it cracks.  They do not, as far as I know, replace a  non-broken one for free, but new stocks are available on their webstore.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a freshly made A3 M1 stock just to circumvent the possibility of my stock cracking with extended shooting.

I really wish Steyr would make an official statement addressing this issue to those of us who purchased AUGs in the covid years. The lack of trust in my firearm has shifted my focus more to my ARs.

Stocks have mfgr dates stamped inside them.

Just get one that was not made during coid and then dont worry about it.

You can easily get several different types styles and colors on theri website.

To be hoenst though the cost of a new stock from theri website at retail seperately from a gun is a such certain percentage of a whole gun that you might as well just buy a whole complete gun if you can afford to.

Spare indiviudal parts are so expensive I don;t buy spare parts i buy a complete spare AUG. It is actually cheaper. Yes, really.

AUGs are so durable you really don't need to stress about it the way you do on other platforms.

Just buy 2 rifles and be done for your lifetime and your childrens and probably theres too.

Unless you run A LOT of full auto and suppressed you will never wera out an AUG.

For example the lifespan if there barrels is know to go over 80,000 rds.

The AUG is definitely a durable rifle. But among covid AUGs, there are some that experienced shattered stocks after 6k rounds. Some with cracked stocks at  60 rounds. It's a gamble. Mine was made in 2021 or 2022, iirc. So it's a gamble for me. I heard they had a bad batch of polymer then.

Is that for the original CL bbls or for the current nitride bbls?
Eternity is coming for us all. It cannot be denied, debated or avoided.
We would do well to ponder how we're going to spend that eternity, because eternity is a long time to be wrong.

Got a source for that 80k round barrel life claim?
I hope we are not talking about Battlefield Las Vegas' typical barrel life of "hasn't yet keyholed at 25yards".
That claim of 80k round count is well above most 5.56mm CL barrel can do.
20k-40k is what I'd expect from most CL barrels. Not 80k.

I also don't know where you're sourcing your Steyr AUG parts but you can easily and pretty cheaply buy them direct from Steyr USA.
Just call them and ask for Grant Irwin (AUG gunsmith) for parts. He has been selling exact parts I wanted for my AUG.
It is ridiculous to buy spare guns for parts as even just 1 single part swapped out will make that backup gun a $$$ wall hanger.
For that money you can buy entire parts bin worth of typical wear items/parts.

Lastly, I also disagree with AUG being indestructible.
My most used AUG A1 is at ~14,000rds.
I've worn out the A1 extractor spring at 9700rds.
I have an AUG A3 with broken bolt sleeve around 8000rds. (early gen sleeve w/o relief cut at corners)
My friend's AUG A2/USR broke the extractor retaining pin around 8000rds.
I've seen pics of a broken bolt from another user with his A2/USR around 20,000rds.
(pics below for reference b/c talk is cheap)

Just to be clear, my absolute favorite rifle is a Steyr AUG A1.
I've owned plenty of preban rifles and modern rifles (FNC, AR70, FNC, Valmet, SVDs, Galils, SCAR, APC223, FS2000,etc).
AUG A1 is still at the top for my own subjective and objective reasons.
I am in no way shitting on the AUG.
I just think it is a bit delusional and misleading to say the AUG won't break parts and will last generations...

Informative post. Thank you.

Parts WILL break or wear out. Will depend on round counts, types of ammo, rate of fire.

After looking at the prices for AUG spare parts AND limited availability, I also decided that it was cheaper just getting a 2nd rifle when it was on sale at PSA. But I'd much rather get a few of the most likely broken or worn parts. Your post on some broken parts is helpful.
