So I was at my local shop and they had the P-38 below.

It is waffen marked and looks like the slide was chromed and the finish stripped off the lower but what the heck is up with the name engraved on the slide?

Just curious what this is and not something I would normally be interested in but the engraving intrigued me

Solingen is a city in Germany. I've seen Solingen Silver Plated Silverware Sets when out antiquing. There is also a Solingen knife company.

Just guessing - it may be the finish applied to that gun is Silver Plate.

Examples:

I get dragged to Antique stores frequently and look for solid silver items vs plated. I'm not an expert and have to google names and such.

It doesn't look like silver plating.
I'd go with bright nickel or chrome.

The engraving looks like something done to personalize someone's gun, or a company mark.
It's hard to tell from a photo, but it looks like machine engraving, and or roll stamping.

Looks like some sort of presentation P38.
What does the other side look like? Both upper and lower wartime marked?
Do the serial numbers all match? That's the important part.

My cursive reading is a bit rusty.  But possibly 'Jahn ? Shope'.

Could be worth a lot depending on when it was done and for what it was presented for, the name on it as well.

Could also be some GI had it done Post-war.

I think it says Jahn H Shope and engraving below the signature looks more modern.

Serials do not match

It’s just a weird gun and if it’s still up there I will try and get more photos

Just a guess but maybe an early post WWII gun put together with spare parts and sold to a GI from a German gun shop of the late 40’s early 50’s ? Perhaps the name and printed solingen is indicating the name of a German shop?
