If so, which if you could only add one?

I ask because I consolidated a while ago (9mm, 22LR, 12GA, 5.56/.223 and .380).

Would you bother or just stand pat?

Recently had this conversation with my son.

He was looking at 300BO.

He went with an AR10.

We already have 308.

I wouldn’t want to get into another caliber at this point.

Not really a long range cartridge, but yes.
6.5cm. Easy to 1k, able to get to a mile with work.

You're right it's not something ELR competitors would use.  1200 yards is long range for 99.98% of people and a 6.5 will do that fine.

Get a "long range" bolt gun in your favorite caliber.  6.5CM, 7mm PRC, 300PRC, 300 Win Mag, etc.

At this time, I have 39 different calibers. No kidding.

Now, some I only have 20 rounds (a box) or so. Others, thousands.

So at this point, why not?

NRA defines long range as 800, 900, and 1000 yards. Over that it's ELR distance.

Because wasteful for atuff that will just sit 99% of the time.

If I add a new caliber, I need to actually justify it in my head. I'm not wanting to have to just to have

.308 and .300BLK are on such wildly different ends of the spectrum (outside of being .30), I’m not really sure how you jump from one to the other.

I’d only consider it if you’re wanting to get into a shorter barrel (10” or less) and hopefully add a can.

If that’s not the road you’re trying to head down, I’d skip it.

I currently have 9mm, 10mm, 45lc, 5.56, 7.62x39, 6.5 creed and 12 Guage. If I did add another caliber it would either be 5.45x39 or be something for elr maybe 338 norma, 300 prc, or 375 cheytac. That being said I still really want a m1 garand in 30-06.

There is ammo I feel that needs to be stockpiled.

9mm, .45 acp, 5.56 and .308 for which most of my firearms are chambered for.

Some ammo like .38/.357, .30 carbine, or 30.06 I do not need to keep in large quantities.

If I run across a good deal on a gun in a "new" to me caliber, it is not disrupting my particular logistics OCD.

I have the following:

Handgun- 22LR, 38 Special, 9MM, 40 S&W.

Rifle- 5.56, 22LR

Shotgun- 12 GA

I wouldn't mind increasing my rifle calibers... .308 or 6.5.

Twenty years ago, I had a C&R FFL. That timeframe meant a lot of milsurp stuff coming into the country and I had a lot of stuff chambered in a LOT of different calibers. It eventually got to be too much, so I sold all the C&R stuff and pared down both my gun collection and my ammo stockpile.

I more or less settled on .22 LR, 9mm, .38 SPL, .357 MAG, .45 ACP, 5.56mm, .223, .308, and 12 gauge. Then, I pared down even further, getting rid of .45 and .308. Then, I added .300 AAC BLK for awhile before abandoning it, too. Then, I added .22 MAG because I picked up a few revolvers with both .22 LR and WMR cylinders.

I currently have guns chambered in .22 LR, .22 WMR, 9mm, .38, .357, 5.56/.223, and 12 gauge, with no real interest in adding any other chamberings. I also prefer to limit my mag-fed guns to using 10/22, AR, Glock 17, 43, or 43X patterns-with the only exception being a 9mm Astra A70.

10mm. I collect S&W revolvers so that would make a nice piece.  IF I got one then I would add a Stribog to go with it and then see if any other platforms stuck my fancy.  Who knows maybe we will get a roller lock 10mm one of these days or an AUG.

If you don't have one, pick something in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.  They're both pretty common these days.  In the past I would've said .270 and .30-06 because you could always find them in stock at the Walmart gun counter.  My guess is the manager has a choice towards what they stock, and those calibers are like the default choices for managers that don't know guns.

Just going with what we already have on-hand, without spending into another caliber.

Rather up the amount what we have versus having to buy a LOT of another caliber.

I much prefer 300blk to 5.56.  My first ar was 300blk, I built a 22lr upper for more economical blasting/practice.  Still ended up with a couple 5.56 uppers but prefer the lesser blast/concision of 300blk.  With AAC making ammo the savings on 5.56 vs 300blk doesn’t really factor into the equation all that much anymore.  At this point if I was just going to have 1 AR, I wouldn’t sweat over it being 300blk.

Also, many say 300blk is worthless without a can.  I beg to differ as ballistically it performs very well out of SBRs and the muzzle blast/concussion is far less than 5.56 making it more pleasant to shoot.  If you’re planning to get a can, all the more reason, but it’s great even without.

Currently, I have 9mm, .45, .38 special/.357, 12ga. and 5.56.

9mm is my standard pistol caliber, and .45 is because I found a good deal on a used .45 PX4.

.38 special and .357 are the revolver caliber, being cheaper and easier to find then .45 Colt or .44 magnum, and can still be fun in a lever action rifle.

12ga is just the only practical shotgun gauge for me. First gun I owned was a Remington 870 Magnum Express.

5.56 is because of my (first) AR-15, and there is just no point in getting a different caliber since I dont hunt, just shoot paper targets.

Three calibers im considering are, .22LR, .40 S&W, and .308.

.22LR is because... I dont have one.

.40 S&W is for a more practical reason, back during Covid, I couldnt find 9mm or .45 anywhere. But found plenty of .40 S&W.

And .308 is just because it feels like a kind of gun and round to have on hand, at least in a bolt action.

Twenty plus years ago I probably had two dozen different calibers, but surplus guns/ammo were dirt cheap and most other commercial calibers weren’t much more.  Like others, I streamlined to common calibers; .22, 12 gauge, 9mm, and 5.56, with the obligatory 45 and 380 acp included as a matter of practicality based on probable future purchases.  There are other calibers I’d like to add but there would need to be either a reasonable expectation the ammo would be available in the future at common ammo prices, or a particular firearm came with a mountain of ammo to negate such concerns.  I hate to think about it, but ammo purchases in 5-10 years are going to make buying fringe calibers now a waste of time.

The LGS has a Savage 340 in .222 and am tempted to get it since when I was a kid I had a serious lust for one, had the $$$$ for it, but my father refused to sign for it saying that I had to get a military caliber just in case there was a revolution. This was in 1968. If it is there when I get back to Plano this weekend, I'm getting it. Better late than never.
