If youre a beginner to intermediate, and still need help on your pistol shooting, particularly the relationship between trigger control and sight alignment/calling your shots, youre best off perfecting and working on your pistol skills and taking pistol classes from a reputable school. 1. ammos cheap, 2. theres typically more concentration on fundamentals, 3. theyre easier to find in your area, and 4. Having a solid pistol background transfers over to the long guns. The pros dont win matches just because they know how to load shotgun shells quickly; they are masters of shooting fundamentals.

Yes, great advice. I started in 3 gun just last year, and at that time I had basically never shot my shotgun. I have spent years shooting rifle matches, and some pistol, but pistol is where I hurt the most. I ended up taking some shotgun clays classes to help with those flying flipped things, and it helped a lot. This year I am working hard to improve my pistol shooting and my gear. I will say the biggest stumbling block so far is how to work a stage, not get tunnel vision, and still not be dead LAST!! :D I believe I am getting better, but it is going to be a long road. Bad lifetime to pick being an engineer.. -Corn |

| I'm by no means good or experienced and only shot a few matches at short ranges, but because I can shoot my pistol more than I can the shotty and rifle, I still do OK in my matches. I had not shot a shotgun for over a year before I entered my fist match and hit everything I pointed at and not that much with the AR, but finished mid pack. So I feel this is very good rule of thumb statement. |
| I've only shot 2, 3 gun matches and in both I have skipped targets and did not even realize I hadn't shot them until after the stage was over. I did the same when starting USPSA, and I think that helped my pistol game since they have matches 2/month vs 1/month 3 gun. But a 10-30 sec pistol course isn't comparable to a 100+ 3 gun stage with swingers, flyers ect. So much going on I get so amped up I will tunnel out some targets that are right in front of me. |
