Stopped by dealer, gave mechanic a few $ to use his compression gauge.
I’m happy with 165, new piston and ring might do a bit better though.

Picked up another $20 worth of parts saws.

Might be getting a Stihl 170 that the current owner says doesn't run for $70. My brother in law is a motorcycle/ATV/small engine mechanic and told me that more often than not, it's the carburetor needs cleaned out and people don't know how it don't want to do it.

Going to be another project/learning experience.

I sold one running and no issues to a buddy for $100
Those saws are cheap as far as pricing $180-$200 new.
No way, would I pay $70 for one not running.
Just my opinion sir.

Enjoy and be safe. I normally have all of my wood cutting done by now, but I haven't even started yet. The stuff I cut split stack this year will be burnt two years from now at the earliest, it's just been too warm as of late.

We're finally getting into some cooler weather so I'm looking forward to getting out and cutting. I actually have a couple of trees I already bucked up late winter that still need to be split, it's just hard to get to them as I have to cross a creek in the woods. Last two times I tired to get the tractor and wood trailer back there, I got stuck. LOL.

MS290/310/390 are pretty much the same saw from my understanding. I know the 290/310 are for sure.

Good luck!

32oz of 20" Stihl greatness for this lil screamer saw

No time to tune in the cut today.
New bar and new chain so it's a bit tight, pre-oiled bar and took it easy for a few minutes, then hammered it out of the cut.
A clean and slightly adjusted fit on factory filter, was used.
High rpm's were 15,450.
Richened it up and got it down to 14,900-15,000 without any 4 stroking, looking for a lil 4 stroking that will adjust out when in the cut.
Throttle response is awesome, not 500i instant but very fast from idle (aprox 3000rpms) to wide open.
Got some more stuff to do to it yet, but it is a screamer.

I will run this saw a bit rich and have recently switched from 50:1 to 40:1

Dude. Good.

Got a compression gauge and pressure/vacuum pump to test out the 051 AVE. Good to have some reference points.

Hopefully by Monday I can decide to abort or order a shit-ton of parts to get to a usable saw.

Yesterday, ordered a DeWalt 12" 20V XR chainsaw to work with the smaller stuff. Should be here for this weekend. Already read about the chain oil leaks, so I'm gonna get some orings to try to fit the plug.

Want to try it out as a 12" saw first and how it does with the 5AH battery it comes with. Lots of people out there saying to swap the bar to a 14" bar, but I'm mainly going to be using it for smaller stuff and clean up purposes.
View Quote
I love my 12" Dewalt but the oil leak is a real pain in the ass.  I put an O ring on the cap (5/8" I think it was), cleaned up the saw, and put it on a piece of cardboard.  20 minutes later there was oil all over the cardboard.  Oil isn't coming from the cap, it's coming from the seam at the bottom of the saw case.  I'm planning on opening it up and seeing if I can figure out where it's coming from.

Other than that it's an awesome saw for light work.  Grab a 3/8" Stihl sharpener to go with it.

051 AV Compression is decent. It won't even build pressure or vacuum though. I know the seal on the ignition side is bad. Had to order a tool for the clutch so haven`t bubble tested that side yet but assume it is bad also.

Sorta.  I run 50:1 and 32:1 gas year round, so I would like to mix larger qtys, but gas skunks out too fast in plastic cans.  Lasts forever in a sealed metal can.  I threw out all my plastic and never looked back.

Gotcha.....I normally only cut during fall & winter and when I start cutting I go through fuel faster than it can go bad, so it's never really been an issue with me.

I like Echo, and generally recommend folks look at the CS-400 or the 490/590 Timber Wolf series for an occasional use saw. I have used some echo saws and lots of there outdoor power equipment, but ended up getting a Makita 6100 for a good deal instead of a 590.

When I was shopping for a small saw I was dead set on a Dolmar, Makita now.  The local landscaping dealer recommended the Echo instead and I haven't bought anything other than Echo since then.  I don't think any of them are bad, but I have been so happy with the Echo products that I just keep going back.

I was trying to buy a used rental Makita from Home Depot, but I was never in the right place at the right time.

Still happy with Echo, and the 620P is way more saw than the 590, even though it is the same displacement.  And $200 more.  But still $400 less than a comparable Stihl or Husqvarna.

I was at a dealer and a guy just bought a Husquvarna saw and they should him quart cans cheap.

I asked if i could get that good deal like like? They guy said if I bought 4 cans.

So I bought four cans, I now mix a gallon of fuel, and pour it into the quart cans.

462 and 500i weigh basically the same at 14lbs.
If you can find a true MS 400 , it is aprox 1lb lighter and has magnesium piston.
If money doesn't matter get the 500i, the efi is great and instant, there is zero throttle lag.
I went in to buy a 462, they were out of stock and just got in two 500i's, I left with one (zero buyers remorse..worth the money)
If you think you want a 500i but don't wanna spend the money, then do not borrow or use one...cause you WILL buy it

In my area:
400 not available, aprox $1,000-$1,100
462 $1,300-$1,350
500i $1,500-$1,550
