I shot a buck Friday evening with my 45/70. He ran off and I did not find him until the next morning. He covered over 400 yards and left the tiniest of blood trails. I am going to have to move back up to the 223. This is disappointing. |

Cartridge responsible for your poor shooting? Sometimes they just don't bleed.
|

Killing cartridge. You figure it out.
Fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The shot was good. Went in just in front of right shoulder came out 6" behind left shoulder cut his Aorta and got the top of both lungs.

Lets see pics Havent ever had a problem with deer running off too far with a rifle. Have had a few deer leave very light blood trail.(Due to muscle or organs blocking entry/exit.) Recently taken up bow hunting I killed 4 deer and the last 2 seasons with crossbow and all 4 of them ran less than 40 yards. 285fps 425grains. 2"cut. Double lung fairly center and you wont have any problems. Heart is good too but its all personal preference. |

I suppose a high velocity round may create more of a wound channel. |

Luck of the draw.
The only cartridges that can be guarunteed to drop an animal in it's track 100% of the time don't leave any meat to eat. I dropped a 280+LB Mule deer in his tracks with a .270 from 360 yards this year. Fragments from his ribs hit his spine and stunned him, even though he was still alive when I got to him, he couldn't move. Just luck. He could have very well run off. |

I started this thread for the same reason I have done my 223 vs deer threads. People don't really have a clue what round does what in deer. There are no absolutes when you shoot something. These results were not, what I was expecting at all. First deer I shot with 45/70. |

I see you are from TX. Where were you hunting? How big was the deer?
I usually hunt the small TX deer with my AR. It works good. Short shots. Most drop in less than 10ft. I'm not sure about the 45/70 not being enough. It may have just been one of those things... |
|
What was the load? A hard cast or even monolithic solid round intended for a water buffalo is going to "ice pick" right through a deer while a dead soft HP ran at way too high velocity is going to "explode" way to early/shallow to be useful on deer.

Shit Happens.....It was you and not the weapon/cartridge.....Get over it. Practice make perfect.

I know it's a "troll thread", but bullet selection really can make a difference with the 45-70. It's a heavy, slow, large-diameter bullet, so expansion is mainly based on bullet design & composition, rather than velocity.
That being said, there have been a shitload of deer killed with a 45-70 in this country. |

This was part of the problem. a 420 Grn Hardcast Keith Style bullet. I dont think you can say ice pick when referring to the 45/70. |

You're doing something wrong because 45-70 will drop bison all day long until the fuckers are almost extinct. Mmm bison burgers. |
|
soft points have issues as well, again I could probably shoot 100 more deer in the same spot and drop them all in a few yards, they would probably all pump out a lot of blood also.

I've killed a few deer with .45/70 rifles.
All the places i can rifle hunt will limit a hunter to about 150 yards maximum due to heavy brush or timber. The .45/70 simply anchors a deer at that range, I haven't ever had one go more than 30 feet from where it was hit and never needed a second shot. I have had worse luck with .30/30 and .308 putting a deer down on one shot. .45/70 just drops them. |
|
Shoot more deer with the load to see if it was a fluke.

You should have shot him twice. Reason I ask, is that I never saw a whitetail that looks as big as the one in your pictures while I was down in Texas. You really could kill them with a .223. I know, I did! |
