Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with a 5.7 is amazing, IMO. Not sure about discounts, though.

Wrong..the TRACKhawk is the expensive one....

The Grand Cherokee TRAILhawk is a very capable off road and a great on road ride as well..since that will probably be 100% of what it does...new ones can be had for $35,000

used 200 series land cruiser or import a nice older cruiser.

i'm leaning toward importing an old diesel cruiser or a newer gas 105 series cruiser, myself.

I’ve owned Chevys, Jeep’s, fords, nissans and a Saturn. My 4Runner is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

All of that.

Their mileage and power especially sucks compared to other SUVs if you’re not looking exclusively at how they perform off-road, which most buyers almost never use to its potential.

Got it. Thanks as a 4Runner owner I can’t argue with that though I wouldn’t exactly call the 4Runner a luxury SUV. Land Cruiser on the other hand which is probably the most capable production SUV On the planet is a Luxury SUV.

If you choose a vehicle based on reliability and depreciation, you are not a car person.

What if the rest of your stable, particularly aren't? The race cars aren't road legal anyway.

GX is a land cruiser Prado in other parts of the world.   Test drove that and 4 runner limited for new car for the wife.     GX is far nicer.    4 runner seats are not comfortable compared to GX.

If you have the means look at a 200 series LC.  You won’t be sorry.

I love mine. The interior on the Big Bend trim is really nice.

Mine has the regular cloth seats, but here's the leather interior

Take a look at the Explorer ST, pretty trick. I drove a 4th Gen 4R forever, not a fan of the current generation. The new Honda pilots don't look terrible, don't know if Honda is still a good car or no. Subaru? Of course an Aid Highlander would be awesome.

How about a Ford Ranger and put a bed topper on it? The Ranger is a damn nice vehicle, maybe want to dump the shocks, but they get good MPG, and are quick. When I owned a SUV I rarely used the cargo compartment, anything I wanted to put back there is something I didn't want inside the truck, so I bought a pick up and it has been drastically more useful, I even had a friend hook me up with one of those military cargo nets for the bed.

If that's the case, convince her the LE is a better car. She won't have to worry about shifting into and out of 4wd when your roads get slushy.

It'll handle better on the pavement, too. I had a '12 LE, now a '19 ORP, and I lived in Maine for five years, so I think I can make a pretty good comparison, considering the winter weather experienced in your neck of the woods. Around here, LEs are only listed about $2-3k more than ORPs.

Once you've gotten her out of the mindset of a part-time 4wd body-on-frame SUV, you can steer her towards more reasonable crossover types like a rav4 or highlander. Toyota just revised the projected MPG, again, for the 2021 4Runner - 16 city, 19 highway. The highlander gets almost 2x better highway fuel efficiency at 36 mpg

That said, I drive like a grandma in my ORP and average 20 mpg, but don't expect the average driver to get anywhere near that
You're probably thinking of they highlander hybrid. But yea the 4Runner gets terrible mileage.

I thought both highlander versions got 36 highway, but the hybrid got 36 city, also. Even if I'm mistaken, the regular highlander's got to get more than 30 mpg highway...

It started with a Gen 4, then an early 5th gen, then a early TRD Pro, then you start doing the math and you're only 10 grand away from a new 2021 Venture

Is it the chip shortage or shipping issues due to covid I wonder?  I've always been a 4Runner guy and I think I'm on my fifth one now. All of them were great and mostly trouble free so I understand the attraction. My current one ('19 ORP) wasn't that hard to find when I bought it new at the end of the model year and I love the thing.  I paid just under $40K for it configured exactly the way I wanted.  But OP appears to be correct.  I can't find any ORP's in stock near me now. There is one Pro for 55K. I didn't look at used since as someone already pointed out, used 4Runner prices are ridiculous enough that you are better off buying new in the long run.

My gf loves the 4Runners but when it was time to replace her 4th gen she found a just off lease gently used GX460 (as others have pointed out) and it kinda makes a little jealous. It is a 4Runner with nicer creature comforts, a nicer ride and a V8. Still love my 4Runner though because it what I wanted and should last me years.

But yeah, it seems like there is quite a shortage here locally now and the prices are quite a bit higher than a couple years ago. Even for a standard SR5.

Had a 5th gen limited. Now have 2 GX460s. No comparison. The Lexus IS the way to go.
