I’ve been following this thread since the start. This activity is so cool but obviously tragic for folks directly affected..
Thank you to the op and everyone contributing to the thread. Especially to the fellow Oregonian |

Hawaii Volcano Eruption Update - Sunday Night (May 20, 2018) |
|
The flow entering the ocean is ~4 miles from my grandparent's old place. They were just off Kehena black sand beach (clothing optional ) in one of those developments. The place was sold off a few years back but I've been there several times and driven all around that area I don't know how many times in my younger years.
That little piece of paradise is going through hell right now. So sad to see the loss of all the homes and roads in the area. As my grandparents always said when we visited, it's not a matter of if Pele gets their house, it's a matter of when. They were well aware of the risk, as I'm sure all residents were before this eruption, but that doesn't help to soften the blow. |

Seconded - Thanks OP. Forgot the honourable mention for the OP in my post the other day. My bad.

Have any volcanologists said if they believe this thing has peaked, or are they expecting it to get worse?
|
|
USGS had a press conference and said it potentially could last months or longer and IIRC they said that there have been periods of eruptions that lasted as long as 300 years. Also said that recently they discovered that Kilauea is a much more explosive volcano based on the geological record than had been thought, as they've found multiple ash layers that indicate explosive eruptions that make the 1924 one seem tiny in comparison.

Listening to some of the experts talking lately I think I would get far far away. This thing can blow and can and has produced massive ash clouds.

On the radio now... someone in Leilani Estates has collapsed and is unresponsive. Was near a fissure... felt ill and then collapsed...
edit... now reporting that he was on a porch and it gave out. Near Mohalo and Kahukai... there's a chance this is one of the 2 guys that have been posting short youtube videos around the area... |

Fissure 6 is acting up. This cam will have something to look at tonight.

Looking like fissures 6, 21, and 8 in Leilani Estates are active tonight.
Especially 6... which may have started some intense fires... all the light is too much for the webcams night settings... |

I heard the USGS guys going over the new update in the background of the livestream. They are going to discuss the danger of flying lava from the fissures. The fissures must be really spewing!

sirens999sirens has posted a video since... so either I'm wrong about him being Bill or Bill is ok. Haven't seen anything yet from ApauHawaiiTours which I'm sure is Scott. I can totally see one or the other of them stepping on a porch that has become unstable... falling and getting knocked out. Especially since most of their videos are from the area the radio call indicated. I too hope they're ok... but I immediately suspected them as the possible people involved. I wonder if we are seeing the death of Kilauea and the birth of a new vent/volcano?

View Quote More likely is that this fissure eruption is just that... along the fissures in the area that have erupted just like this innumerable times in the past. One need only look at the map to see all the old flows and cinder cones all over the area. |
