Fissure 16 has opened East of the other fissures.  What little info I have is saying that it's in the woods/jungle and not an immediate threat to any houses.  Reports of lava spatter... no sustained flow yet.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.

Thoughts are with all those affected.  Some folks have lost everything and that is a tragedy.

Really interesting thread to read, though.

They're saying another fissure is opening near fissure 16.  which to me is just a continuation of 16... but who am I to criticize their labeling system?

Anyway according to USGS 16 produced a flow 750 feet long and it's activity is weakening.  17 started steaming earlier in the day and is just started spattering out lava.

I updated my map with a guess based on their text description... but will have to wait for pictures for a more firm location.

got fissure 18 this morning.  Still trying to pin down it's location.  My best guess based on descriptions and ground level videos is on my map

I read something in the paper that sounded odd. It said that the HI NG would not go to a number of areas to help because they do not have gas masks that they can use. Is this indeed the case?

which don't happen in shield type volcanoes such as Hawaii.

... well... I guess there could be a land slide... there is evidence of that happening in the geologic past... but never in recorded history.  So there would have to be some pretty compelling evidence that such a thing were about to happen before it's even worth considering.

if there's a new one it'll be 18.

the steaming cracks that people were calling 17 didn't produce lava so did not get the name.

The fissure that people were calling 18 is officially 17.  So any new fissure will be 18.
