We need like 30 issues of Firepower magazine for inspiration.

Miami I think I recall that sling.

There's a lot of fodder to be had from conflicts and organized crime in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East for sure.

A commando class like mentioned or a merc class, on top of the cartel one, would be cool. Maybe an open class to represent the time period broadly (if you could get it during the time period in question, it can be used).

I'm curious about the bipod prohibition. A lot of combat rifles available back then to varying degrees came with assault bipods [among others, the HK-91, Port. AR-10, FAL, BM-59 and BM-69, etc., and more easily removable (including clamp-on) bipods for M1As/M-14s, ARs, and such].

I'm thinking a BM59 would look very much at home at such a competition.

Im more for time period up to the end of the 80's than a more narrowed focus of cops and robbers.  I think a open ended competition with period correct weapons from the 70's and 80's in either 2 or 3 gun style. Regan era  style.

Handgun - no optics/dust cover rail/extended mags

Shotgun - pump or period correct semi auto, no optics/extended mags

Rifle - iron sights only/no extended mags, period correct or clone of one.

Keep it simple and fun. 2 gun would probably draw more crowd.  Make dress up optional or at least some basic setup maybe retro t shirt minimum.

Interesting how this evolved into more of a cops and robbers sort of theme than a general period one.

Anyhow, does anyone recall these slings being around back in the day?  GRSC V-TAC Snap Sling made by Ed Verdugo.  Very little online about it, although I think I saw a comment on a forum that it inspired the Giles tactical sling that debuted in 1989.  My dad says he bought his in the early 1990s for about $20, but he's not absolutely certain.  The ones from the wayback mahine archived website are a bit different as sold from 1999-2001.  Any other period tactical slings out there?

@bigstick61 Have you ever seen the sling the Brits used with the SA80? Your pics remind me of it, and it was from the era.

When he pushed a Dade County Public Safety Department green and white. That was in the 70s.

Him as an agent doing a UC bust.

By then he carried a Beretta 92.  This was 81 or 82.

That’s fairly close to the divisions in my outline.  I just used “cop jargon” because I had to call them something.  Attire and general “theme” options can be whatever folks want.

Most “Cold Warrior” or “Bush Commando” loadouts discussed here would fit into the categories I laid out, and be competitive with the “cop gear”.

That’s my intention here, to allow for the widest selection of guns to be able to play and compete with a decent amount of “equipment parity”.

Interesting picture.
During police academy training, I kicked a door open whole keeping both hands on my handgun. Training officer told me that was stuff from TV and movies and to use your weak hand to push a door open.

Oh absolutely.  You certainly aren’t “gaining a competitive advantage” with that barrel profile.

@miami_jbt

It's awesome that you have so many pictures of your dad undercover... my dad did 18 months undercover detached to the secret service in the early 80s and maybe 3 pictures exist..

The first time he saw part of an episode of Miami Vice, he looked at me and said "i picked the wrong place to be undercover. " his cool clothes were jeans, t shirts and a windbreaker.. his uc car was a wrecked yellow Camaro...

Windbreakers.

I almost bought a GB because the store had the gun, a leather duty holster, a leather double mag pouch, and a total of three mags. I figured I could buy the lot and sell the mags and make my money back.

The editor of Firearms News is a huge retro guy. Got his first AR-15 in 1979 and his first job in the gun industry was building AR-15s from kits when he was a teenager in the early 80s. I heard that he was looking to do a Retro 3-Gun event in Ohio next year.
