Glock G17 with 19 rounds of Buffalo Bore 9mm+P+ penetrator mag dump into a charging bear?

There’s a huge difference between something that’s optimal, and something that can work.

I have no clue. For a little bear? Sure. For a big one? Fuck if I know. I've never killed anything other than deer.
|
|
We do this in GD several times every couple years.
What I've learned is that someone once killed a bad bear with a 9mm, and the story will be posted soon. |
|
I love 10mm as much as anyone else...but that would be bare (heh) minimum for me.
9mm would make it mad. |
|
WTF?
If you just wanna tickle the bear, bring a feather. It's lighter and less of a hassle to carry. |
|
I got to speak with a bear hunting guide, used hounds, and he was fine with a .22.
BUT If I have to shoot a bear that's coming straight at me I want better penitration. That means something like a 10mm. |

What round for bear thread...oh these are always entertaining

Yet if you go off actual data just about any handgun actually used is successful. Carry what you have with good ammo in it and roll on. |

If your gona use a 9, file the front site off before you go out.

I’ve shot a full grown steer between the eyes with a .22. He went straight down. Didn’t even mooove.

I think the biggest recorded bear killed with a firearm was killed with a .22 pistol, but then again we shot a guy a bunch of times with a .50 and he lived for 2 days, so fuck if I know.

There was a thread a while back about using handguns to defend against bears. 9mm was surprisingly much more effective than would be imagined.
Article on self defense against bears with handguns by caliber |

You just need a .22 short NAA mini revolver and a hiking/fishing partner.
A .22 short to the knee and you only need to run faster than them. |
|
If you shoot a bear with 9mm, it will absolutely die.
Eventually. Of course, the same is also true if you don't shoot a bear with anything. |
|
A 17hmr will work. If you are hidden and non odiferous and a well placed shot. I will be standing aways off with a camera. Im thinking that IF I had to encounter a worst case scenario with a bear a long barreled 458 Lott with a 30rd mag would be nice.

9mm has taken down grizzlys.
https://concealednation.org/2018/10/handguns-for-bear-defense-a-study-by-caliber/ But if you can, why not carry something bigger with lots of ammo? Secondly, the caliber of the firearm used seems to matter less than the ability of the shooter under pressure. A .357 Magnum is formidable as hell, but that doesn't mean anything when you can't hit a charging bear. View Quote |

Even I who hateth Glock with fervor bought a G20 and G40 because I have too many bears at home, even numbers this year brown vs blacks when it used to be 95% blacks. |

OP, how many rounds do you expect to fire at a charging bear?? Do you think that you can place the shots, under stress, where they will do the most good!!!! While I have not had to shoot a bear in self defense, I have shot several with rifles and some had a hand gun!
I carry a Glock 10mm with good ammo in the woods. |

It probably do the job just fine for black bear, Grizzly it may work if you're really lucky but I'd be crapping my pants it is never something I want to try.

If you Mag dump 19 rounds into a charging bear you either started shooting way too early or you have a Glock 18 instead of a Glock 17. Up here the Fed folks take Grizzly shootings seriously and they will investigate it thoroughly. Your life better have been in danger or you will be prosecuted. In a true charge situation you may get a couple of shots off if you are lucky. The only dumping will be in your shorts. |

In most places you are more likely to need your pistol against 2 legged predators.
9mm is actually effective against bears per the actual statistics. Carry what you have available. |
|
Black bear? Yelling should work fine as long as she doesn't have cubs.

I largely agree with you but I do recall a case up in Alaska I think it was in 2013. The guy shot a huge bear with an AK74 I think 13 Rounds it took to put it down he was cleared. |

Moving to Montana next year, within traditional grizzly country.
I just picked up a 10mm and Buffalo Bore 220gr hardcast to run through it. YMMV but 10mm is the smallest I would dare to go for bear defense. |
|
Maybe, just maybe if it's a little black bear.
If you read the account if those rangers that went in search of the body of that walking with bears idiot, you'll know that a brown bear that charged them took a mag dump of .40s&w and kept charging, it was only put down with 12ga slugs. When they studied the body they found it was also holding six .38 cal slugs from someone else. So the only thing I'd recommend you do with a G19 and a mag of 9mm is show it to the bear and try to convince it of how awesome the gun is. |

If you are willing to use 10mm on grizzly, then logically you should be able to use smaller calibers on black. Btw, a lot of people have had better luck with 200gr 10mm in glock 20s rather than 220. |

If im expecting to be wrestling with a +600lbs wild animal im going to bring something that gives me an advantage.
As much as I advocate for 9mm, I'm personally not bringing it to a bear fight if there's a better or cheaper option. Having said that, 12 guage 1# buck or slug |
|
Going to depend on the type and age of the bear. I’ve seen a small black bear dropped with a 22 like it was a little fucking bitch. Entered behind the ear and did not exit. You live in Texas why fuck around when you can easily get something capable.
|
|
|
9mm will be fine.
I've seen vids of bears attacking people being dropped by a small revolver. I think too many people have an inclination to think that they're not flesh and bone. |
|
|
No matter what you have in hand, when a 1,400lb bear is coming towards you, you'll wish you had more firepower.
.45-70 is a sweet cartridge |
|
These threads always crack me up.
any decent self defense round will do for black bears. i would carry for human threats not bear |
