that ship has always fascinated me, as much as the Victory. How often in the last century and a half has she been allowed to sail under her own canvas?

They could sell old timber slivers as souvenirs.

Shit, I'd probably buy one, too. Put it next to the chunk of the Berlin Wall my folks got when I was a kid.

Use the proceeds to help keep the ship preserved.

ETA: A little looking about through the links in the OP article...

Always liked the story of the Crane Naval tree guys having all their white oaks identified and individually numbered and named for decades of future use for the USS Constitution.  Talk about long term planning!

Holy crap! I will be in Boston this weekend and planned on seeing her. I guess my timing is pretty good. The U.S.S. Constitution is pretty much the coolest thing in the world.

In one of the links (through the photos, I think in this case the one of either the tree felling or the truck delivery of logs), there was mention from a Crane guy about how they check the 53k acres periodically to tally the trees, including sometimes ID'ing new candidates.

The USS Constitution goes out once a year to turn it around so it faces a different direction at the dock.
There is a lottery to pick people that can ride her out for the duration. All under her own power.

Not sure when they will start it again, but I entered it several years in a row. But never got picked. Must be hundreds of thousands that enter it.

Only 10% of the ship is 'original'.

Is it really still the USS Constitution?

Very few.  It literally takes an act of congress to happen.  When it does it's not under full sail due to fear of losing her...

IIRC, the Naval Academy midshipmen serve as the crew when she goes under sail. I could also seem to recall it does a bit more than just turn around. Not saying it cruises to Miami or anything, but it does get out in the open water with a motored tender nearby.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

They do make some pens out of the old wood.
They also sell the copper hull sheeting struck into coins.

I keep one in my vest behind the plate for good luck.

As our modern day Navy falls below 300 ships we are doomed. Rotation or building new vessels is nearly  impossible due to the lack of dry docks available that can handle large naval ship structures. Our wonderful government has only four dry docks that they control the rest are in private industry.  Now that we are done restoring a piece of naval history lets start taking back our place as a naval presence throughout the world.

As the US infrastructure crumbles around us how many dry docks are available in the USA to build military naval might?

Just a thought and enjoyed the pictures!

Cool video, thanks for that.  Glad to see her guns still work as well.  Was thinking the whole time if this commissioned warship still had her teeth.

I believe she was underway under her own sail in 1997 and 2007 wiki says 1997 and 2012.

I read a story about a hall at Oxford a few years ago. The roof needed to be replaced, everyone was in a panic because they had no idea where they were going to get the right sized oak trees for the rafters. Panicked until one of the experienced custodians showed them the showed them the grove where they'd been planted the last time the roof had been repaired. New oak beams.
