I'm excited to get it done, will be a several month long project, building it in stages as my schedule allows. Likely won't get the warm room put in till the fall, but will still be functional.

Not a whole lot more progress, finished the with the floor joists, stacked the rest of the pier (still needs sealant on sections above pier floor), and installed conduit for pier electrical and data to the eventual warm room location.

Unfortunately injured my knee while painting the subflooring, so taking it easy for the time being.

Sweet!

I wish I had open skies like that.

I finally got my scope back, just need to get everything set back up and test out the optics.    I also bought a Skywatcher adventurer for travel shooting, but havent played with it yet.

Care to explain your setup? Any advice/information for a newbie?

I use my mum14 for stargazing and am fascinated, what you're able to see is on an entirely different level.

How do I got about getting into it?

Zach540's observatory build pictures motivated me to do something today on my own dome project.

Today was a nice cool day, so I decided to dig the hole for the pier.

The only place that works in my back yard is in the center of my garden, which when the dome is placed, will look pretty nice.  I can then finish up the sandstone.

The pier is  7" diameter x 7 foot long by roughly 1/4" thick.  The pier is almost 4 foot in the ground, so I did not pour a footer, I really don't think it will need one.  I will be pouring concrete around the outside of the pier and using a tamping bar to compact the concrete.  I'll then fill the tube with concrete.

After the concrete cures, I am going to tig on a round plate that I can bolt the pier plate for my mount to.  This thing isn't going to go anywhere.  It should be very stable.

Still sanding it down in preparation for fiberglassing.  If I actually spent time on it instead of working on it piecemeal, I could have it finished and installed in 3-4 days.

My first test of the Skywatcher Adventurer Pro with a Canon 5D MKIII.

I was camping with a bunch of arfcom guys and was pretty well into the beer and whiskey but I still think this came out alright.

I need to try fixing some of the noise issues, this camera will really need a master dark and bias to help.   The other thing and this is going to end up being a problem is there is no way to dither with this mount, obviously its just a small travel mount and so it has limitations but dithering is an absolute must.   There is a shit ton of correlation noise in this image.

Overall I like it, but I need to find a way to dither.

Yesterday I finished installing the pier.  It took 400 lbs. of concrete.  With the tube weighing over 200 lbs itself, I think I have plenty of weight in this mount.

While the concrete was curing, I built the pier plate system from two brake rotors.  I used 1/2" all-thread for the leveling system, tapping, then tigging it into the top plate.

The brake rotor fits perfectly into the top of the 7" tube with nearly no wiggle room.  I tigged the pier plate to the tube itself, so this system should be extremely stable.

Nice.
Are you looking for a way to dither without using a laptop connected to the ST-4 guiding input?  That would have to be total manually controlled dither wouldn't it?
It looks like the Skywatcher Adventurer Pro has a ST-4 auto guider input that allows RA only guiding.
I use a free program called APT (Astrophotography Tool) for my image capturing, it has an option called APT Pulse Dithering for dithering mounts that are self guided (SkyWatcher StarAdventure, AstroTrac, etc.).
But APT does require a computer and interface to the mount to run.
If I remember you are using SGP for capture, does it have a dithering mode for self guided mounts?

I'm hoping to finally get the ES80 out tonight to test it, I'm hoping everything is good, if not I'm just going to buy a new scope.

Your pier is looking awesome, I also bought two rotors to make the plates, I just don't have a pier yet and I'll probably hold off until I buy a new mount.

Ideally yes I want to dither without a computer.   I know that I could do it manually but I don't want to have to do this after every shot because that would be a huge pain and add in tons of time.   I'm lazy and that sounds like work

It just may not be possible, but damn it I'm going to try and work something out.   I might post on cloudy nights to see if anyone else has thought of anything.

Not my best work, but a half moon and high clouds aren't helping tonight.  No chance of any Jovian moons with the crappy, water-laden atmosphere.

Jupiter is so low right now for me that I can't hardly see the bands in a 8" scope.  Seeing is so poor down that low (for my location), that it is a wobbly mess.

Sunday night I shot the Iris nebula.  I only shot a total of 3 hours, but like always, I get the itch to process what I shoot each night.  That is one thing I need to work on, shooting a subject for at least 10 hours before processing the image.  The closest I got so far is 4.5 hours or so  .

Anyway, this is what I got so far with the Iris Nebula.

I tried out my new pier mount last night and shot the Dumbbell Nebula in LRGB+Ha

Since it is a weekday and I had to get up for work in the morning, I set a camping cot out by the mount so I could sleep and not have the mount/telescope walk off (I live in a nice neighborhood, but you never know).

It was nice and cool 50° out.  I got roughly 3.5 hours on the Dumbell nebula and a good sleep under the stars at the same time.

Shot with the following.

ZWO ASI120MC-S Guide Camera

To the guys that know what they're doing:

Is there an easy way to remove the orange light pollution from an image?   I tried a few more of the moon, one turned out OK other than the orange background, and removing the orange by making it black and white and changing contrast doesn't work when there's the moon craters using a lot of that contrast to look pretty.

What are the details on the moon photo?  I've tried a few and they're washed out or too dark,a nd the in camerae HDR (Canon D70)  looks too un-natural.

Is a tracking mount needed?   What software for post processing?  (I believe I asked this once, but no clue what it might be this time, you have too many toys)

@brass

The moon is EASY to shoot.  It's a very bright object, so no special technique needed.  EXIF for that shot is 600mm, 1/160, f/9, ISO 400.  D500 and the Tamron 150-600.

I do shoot from a tripod, mirror-up remote, with electronic front curtain.  The EFC is probably overkill, and shooting handheld isn't hard, but I like the tripod.

I then run it through Lightroom for crop, levels, sharpness, noise, etc.  Here's the frame out of the camera:

Have just been playing with color curves, but I didn't know if there was a neat filter or method to pull out just the orange as something like a mask/color select type thing.

If you've got LR there's a tool in the Develop module that lets you target specific colors and you can adjust hue, saturation, and luminance.  I'd start by slightly lowering luminance and killing a lot of the saturation.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot when I've got time to fiddle, I haven't delved into lightroom for much of anything, I don't even know if the version I have can do stacking or not.   I think it's 7, the newest one that doesn't need subscription/cloud/online. The subscription/online is the reason I don't have photoshop, that must be very desirable, as the places that sell old versions want a ton for anything newer than CS3 that doesn't need to be online/subscription based.
