TA31F-RMR. There is no better answer.
View Quote

It really is nice.  The RMR is not so high that it's awkward to use (which is what I thought just looking at them prior to using).  It's fast from 0-100 with the RMR.  The FOV of the 31 is great, and while the eye relief is less than a 33, you can put your eye the same distance away and get the same FOV as a 33.  Switching back and forth between the scope and the RMR is faster than turning a mag ring on a variable, and faster than canting the rifle to 2 o'clock for an offset RDS, which I did for a while when shooting Open 3 gun.

I really like that setup, it's on an 18" gun.

My TA33GH is on my lightweight 16".  That's a nice little scope.  I prefer the 31 but for a lighter build it's perfect.

I had a TA11 years ago.  I wish I hadn't sold it.  I mostly disliked that it was a red donut reticle.

Good timing for this thread. Need something for a new SBR and am torn between a T1 or one of the small circle dot acogs like the ta26 or ta44.

TA31RCO-M4 and offset T1 was a sweet combo too.  Moved my optics around but wouldn't hesitate to go back to that combo if I had a spare T1.

I got one, also a TA31F, and I have the red chevron, and a Trijicon RDS on an 45 degree mount.

If you look thru one, you will wonder why anybody wants anything else, clear sharp optics with no distortion or CA, excellent field of view.
If you humped one for more than 30 minutes, you will wonder why anybody wants one, it makes the Elcan looks and feel light.

I am actually contemplating replacing that with wither the VCOG or Elcan Specter 1-4X.

Is it worth double the price to add a throw lever that gets you from 1-4x instantly???

Agree with you both. Having ditched ACOGs for variables then back to ACOGs with RMR I have found what works the best for me. Perfect setup for speed and accuracy at all ranges with built in redundancy.

Eye relief on the TA31 sucks.

Longer eye relief > Larger FOV

See how stupid that is when you state an opinion as fact? A ton of people prefer the TA33, a ton of people prefer the TA11, a ton of people prefer the TA31. It's a trade-off.

A TA33 barely weighs more than an Aimpoint T1, but it has 3x magnification.
A TA31 requires your eyelashes to be brushing up against the optic to be able to see through it.

I know which one I prefer.

Yep I'd go with a 1-? variable of your choice.  ACOG's are awesome but a little limited with the fixed magnification.

As the owner of 2 ACOGs, I'm going with this ^

No. The 1X on the Elcan still suffers from the same issue as normal 1-4 optics namely that its still not a true 1X. Its damn close but not perfect, piggy backing a mini red dot on them is just a popular as it is on ACOG's.

LT-105, of course.

TA33G-H on an LT-105 weighs 9.40 ounces. With a Butler Creek front flip cap included, it's 9.75 ounces. I keep the flip cap on there to use the TA33 like a red dot. With it closed, you keep both eyes open and your right eye will see the reticle while your left eye sees everything else. It works really well.

Baloney.  Yes the eye relief is short, but not that short.  The 31 weighs 2.2 oz more than the 33.  The FOV is worth it, for me, especially for a rifle with low recoil (like an AR).

Of course this is all subjective, as all ACOGs are great optics at the end of the day. The rest is debating chocolate being better than vanilla. I will say that I shoot NTCH and have zero issue with 31 eye relief. Shoulder, reticle is on target, trigger press, repeat. I don't know how it could really be an issue with NTCH shooting. If one shoots on another platform, or doesn't shoot NTCH I could see using other models. I follow my own advice. My AR SBR sports a 31, Tavor has a 33, and Scar 17 has a 11. They're all great for their own roles, and at the end of the day are all flexible enough to do each other's job fine.

Problem with variables is the "in between" settings.  I really like my NF 1-4, but I don't use 2 or 3, so it's sort of waste.  I'll probably go back to a TA-33 or jump up to an Elcan if I can swing it.

I am a big ACOG fan. I like the TA31 with RMR or Docter on top. Best of both worlds. I actually like the Docter better than the RMR. It seems to respond to light changes better. I recently got an ECOS for my 6920. I like having irons as well.

the only thing that would make me pause is the eye relief.

Hence the recommendation for the TA33.

FOV on the TA33 sucks.

Larger FOV > longer eye relief.

That .gif is why I bought my first TA31. I have two now, if that tells you anything.

Any reason why I shouldn't buy one to replace my Eotech?

Price is no big deal I'm capable of saving... so other than that?

Fixed magnification

If price is no big deal why not a Kahles 1x-6x?

I have honestly never heard of them.

Look it up.  Larue has them with a combo mount.  Not cheap, but people say it's the best glass they've ever seen, great FOV, durable...simply the very best there is.
