If you had a somewhat limited budget of $1-2M (give or take a little) total and you wanted to retire to the ocean and do island hopping outside the U.S., what boat would you choose?

What islands would (or could) you safely visit and resupply at for extended visits?

What logistics problems do you foresee?

Keep in mind that with the given budget, you can't spend it all on the boat. You need money to buy food, fuel, and basic necessities.

The boat needs to be highly reliable and very seaworthy for long blue water voyages.

It must be manageable by a crew of 2-3 people.

Honestly, I would not buy a boat at all.  I'd fly to the Virgin Islands and rent one.

My sister spends a month at a time on a 32' Beneteau that way just about every year.

Cool boat, but I can tell you've never crossed an ocean on a small vessel.  That thing would kill you over the long haul.

I can see this will be productive.

To expand a little, the boat needs to be comfortable for 2-3 people over lengthy trips. Speed boats full of whores do not meet the criteria.

Painted stealth black or battleship grey, that trawler would be perfect, is there a crawlspace for dead hooker storage? or would you just use the fish locker??

Spent around 10 years crewing and fishing billfish / tuna tournys on this boat.

44' Pacifica. Love that hull. 15' beam, very deep V hull and stable as fuck in big seas. While scary 33' seas were no problem. Plus it fishes "dirty" in the wake. Fish seem to like the hull.

Not the best but can be had these days for a good price. Take the rest of $$ to repower and fix everything up.

Have to love what you know!

I've been pricing boats, They're pretty reasonable right now due to the economy. And if done right you can live for less than a grand a month on a properly equipped vessel.

I'm not sure I have the skills for sailing. I would have to learn a lot more about it before considering it.

A used SeaRay 540 or Swift Trawler 52 look very promising. Unfortunately, that pushes the budget requirements to at least $2M. One mil for the boat and the other mil for general subsistence.

However, I do believe that $60k a year is enough to exist on such a boat in relative comfort.

Your boat, if properly equipped, can provide you with food and water. It can take you anywhere you want to go on little to no fuel. Having little space for excess crap makes you think really hard about buying that nifty new whatsamajig. Stay out of popular tourist areas. If you need repairs that you can't do yourself, pull into an out of the way fishing port rather than hit the yacht repair yards. The guys that work on fishing boats know how to make repairs that working men stake their lives on and do it much cheaper. Make friends among those that live aboard, they'll pass on lots of tips for places to go and where to find good deals. Stay on the hook as much as possible, use your tender for supplies and excursions.

YAMAL WILL DEVOUR YOUR SOUL

The NS Yamal is a Russian Arktika class nuclear powered icebreaker operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company. It is named after the Yamal Peninsula in Northwest Siberia; the name means End of the Land in Nenets.

Yamal is one of the Russian "Arctic" family of icebreakers, the most powerful icebreakers in the world.
