If you had a somewhat limited budget of $1-2M (give or take a little) total and you wanted to retire to the ocean and do island hopping outside the U.S., what boat would you choose?
What islands would (or could) you safely visit and resupply at for extended visits? What logistics problems do you foresee? Keep in mind that with the given budget, you can't spend it all on the boat. You need money to buy food, fuel, and basic necessities. The boat needs to be highly reliable and very seaworthy for long blue water voyages. It must be manageable by a crew of 2-3 people. |
|
Honestly, I would not buy a boat at all. I'd fly to the Virgin Islands and rent one.
My sister spends a month at a time on a 32' Beneteau that way just about every year. |

Cigarette Boat complete w/ Miami Vice soundtrack. http://www.imaginelifestyles.com/sites/all/files/u2/SLSAMGBoat1.jpg Cool boat, but I can tell you've never crossed an ocean on a small vessel. That thing would kill you over the long haul. |
|
I can see this will be productive.
To expand a little, the boat needs to be comfortable for 2-3 people over lengthy trips. Speed boats full of whores do not meet the criteria. |
|
I was gonna say this until I saw your stipulations about crew and cost since it looks so amazing:

Should find one that fits your criteria on these pages. "Nordhavn" is Nordic for "Badass motherfuckin trawler type boats". |

Painted stealth black or battleship grey, that trawler would be perfect, is there a crawlspace for dead hooker storage? or would you just use the fish locker?? |

you're going to retire on 1-2 million?
Clearly you haven't priced boats in a while or anything else 1.5M / 25 years = $60,000/ year |

And if done right you can live for less than a grand a month on a properly equipped vessel. |

Tahiti Ketch
Sea worthy, room for a crew of five nekid ladies, Cheaper to operate than a go fast boat, lower initial cost. South Pacific Islands. Maybe Olongapo. And another |

I'm not sure I have the skills for sailing. I would have to learn a lot more about it before considering it.
A used SeaRay 540 or Swift Trawler 52 look very promising. Unfortunately, that pushes the budget requirements to at least $2M. One mil for the boat and the other mil for general subsistence. However, I do believe that $60k a year is enough to exist on such a boat in relative comfort. |

Wow...WADR, this thread is full of landlubbers ignorant of life at sea.

It can take you anywhere you want to go on little to no fuel. Having little space for excess crap makes you think really hard about buying that nifty new whatsamajig. Stay out of popular tourist areas. If you need repairs that you can't do yourself, pull into an out of the way fishing port rather than hit the yacht repair yards. The guys that work on fishing boats know how to make repairs that working men stake their lives on and do it much cheaper. Make friends among those that live aboard, they'll pass on lots of tips for places to go and where to find good deals. Stay on the hook as much as possible, use your tender for supplies and excursions. http://www.livingaboard.com/forum/ |

None for that money. I don't want to live my life damp or wet all the time and I can't buy a big enough boat to prevent that.

YAMAL WILL DEVOUR YOUR SOUL The NS Yamal is a Russian Arktika class nuclear powered icebreaker operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company. It is named after the Yamal Peninsula in Northwest Siberia; the name means End of the Land in Nenets. Yamal is one of the Russian "Arctic" family of icebreakers, the most powerful icebreakers in the world. |

M y buddy's $300K boat sank last week or maybe 2 weeks when those storms blew through Ft Walton Beach. Apparently a few boats were sunk in that storm.
I'm not sure I would want all my possessions on a boat. YMMV |

I've been wanting a Hunton 43' for a long time. Then again, I'd just want to cruise around the Bahamas or French Polynesia.

Only way I am sailing the seas is in my fully equipped battleship. Until I get one, I am staying out of the water.

1-2 Mil? Dude, you need "Fuck You Money" to really do what you're thinking about. I wouldn't even do it until I had "Fuck You & Your Entire Family" money.
If I did? US Submarines Phoenix 1000. 65 Meter luxury submarine. I figure it'd pay for itself after making a few runs to Colombia and back anyway |
