I thought the reason Mars lacked atmosphere & surface water was the lack of a magnetic core to divert the solar wind…..

When aliens in the movies send microbes and fungi to terraform earth we regard that as the worst thing imaginable and these guys just casually discuss it as NBD.

Exactly. No magnetosphere is something they cannot change and will always make terraforming Mars pointless.

So the answer to man made climate change is to change the climate on another planet?

Interesting.

So they can make breathable air on Mars but your lungs will probably freeze when you inhale since it’s so cold.

I always get a kick out of the window lickers who think Mars can be terraformed. Kinda like all the people who think FTL speeds/warp drive can ever happen.

There is make believe fantasy, and then there is actual science. Most dipshits live in fantasy land.

This. No magnetosphere to protect the existing surface gasses and a heatwave on the equator there broils the dirt at 40°F.

Sure, you could import survival facilities to temporarily support humans for a while, but that will be very expensive, retroactive funeral arrangements.

I think Musk knows all that. He's a brilliant guy. I'm starting to think his whole push to Mars is a scam. His real desire is to eventually be the only human buried on Mars. That would definitely be the ultimate in legacy material. China's first emperor was buried with hundreds of clay soldiers, Julius Caesar was cremated at his temple in Rome, Attila the Hun was buried under a diverted river for that purpose and great pharoahs slept under pyramids, but no other earthings permanantly sleep on another world. I'd do it if i had Musk's FU money. Folks would talk about that for thousands of years.

Mars will never have true surface water or Atmo.

With no magnetic field it all gets blown away in the “wind”.

Brilliant!  Seed a planet with sentient engineered beings that can breathe the atmosphere, then give them technology that benefits them but slowly transforms the place.

The atmosphere is so thin that even if it was pure O2 you'd still probably die.

I did a Google search on the altitude equivalence here on earth and it was something like 28km high.  If true holy shit...

No.  Breathable atmosphere is strictly prohibited by the Martian homeowner's association rules.  They don't want any dirty Venusians moving in.

The problem is that Mars has little to no magnetosphere.  Any gasses lighter than CO2 will simply be blown away into space by solar wind.

Mars DID have an atmosphere, and water.  But it's all in deep space now.

Yeah, breathing pure oxygen on Mars would be like breathing 1/15th the amount of oxygen you get at the top of Everest.

Throw some asteroids/comets at Mars.
Mass drive some calcium carbonate from Venus too.

Don’t miss and hit Earth.

Restart the core and thicken the atmosphere.

Not true. Current technology could, in theory, build a superconducting ring around Mars that would be able to generate enough of a magnetic field to stop ablative loss from the solar wind.

The largest hurdles are:

1. No one has built a superconductor 1000's of km's long and measured the losses(which should be zero)

2. Getting enough Bismuth/Yttrium and a few other minerals to Mars, depending on the type of SC used.

3. It's a planet sized project.

A sufficiently large magnetic field isn't the biggest issue with terraforming Mars. Replenishing the atmosphere on any sort of human timescale is.
