Life is either a daring adventure or nothing - Helen Keller

ETA:

The full quote - Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no
safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Lol, that quote is total bullshit. Risk is always present, but many risks can be mitigated. Many, many dangers should absolutely be avoided because it is much safer than any exposure. This quote is basically Helen Keller old-school YOLO. Being too risk-averse is a negative, but so is taking risks without any consideration or estimation of the potential outcomes and the odds of their occurrence. This Alex Honnold guy is not taking uncalculated risks, he isn't doing any of these dangerous solo climbs without making sure he is prepared for them. He works every single day to be the man he needs to be in order to not fall.

You think he's going on a climb when he's on the verge of getting a cold or there is a slight chance of wind gusts? Having said that, there is still a great risk of semething happening beyond his control even on a perfect day (cramp, falling rock, something crazy like a bird, etc) The part that Alex has mastered that most other climbers couldn't do is eliminate doubt during his climb. When he gets in a tough spot where he has to make a quick decision (with only two possible outcomes), he decides what the best route is quickly without any doubt. Doubt in your mind at any point on a rock with no rope is a killer.

There is no doubt that he is an amazing climber.  I would wager on him in damned near any chun-up contest.
Unfortunately, unless he stops now, he will probably be dead within a couple of years.  Odds like those that he risks, enevitably catch up with him.

Just like my friend's brother who used to be one of the top BASE jumpers in the world....focus on the "used to be" part.

Amazing.

There's a good doc on Netflix called Valley Uprising about the generations of climbers in Yosemite. There's a bit on Honnold.

I have never been forced to do anything. It certainly was my sworn duty and choice, but I have risked my life at times to ultimately perform a body recovery. Life is full of tough choices, but some people make it harder than it has to be.

He may not mind being left in the woods, but your government frowns against it in their park...

I was just reading on BBC that in 2015, people were in awe that two guys partnered to "speed climb," did it without climbing aids but WITH safety harness ropes to prevent fatal falls. The big news was the did in 19 days, which was WOW just two years ago.
Now, I want to put in perspective of Alex's true feat, sure it nuts that he had no climbing aids, no safety harness, no safety ropes, and no "sped climbing partner"... what's CRAZY, he friggin did it in 4 hours... No make that under 4 hours!!!!!

Unfortunately you've either misread or misunderstood that which you'd read.

19 days is not a speed record on El Cap.

@buoux I did not misquote the article. I never said it was the fastest ascent, it was the first for no climbing aids including the fastest for no climbing aids. Please read the article and watch the video, it really put into perspective what Alex did.

Thanks good read.
" Honnold completed that climb, known as Moonlight Buttress, in Utah’s Zion National Park"
Just reading that I noticed my heart beat kick up a click or two and my palms moistened. I love Zion crack

I am torn between feeling sorry for or envies about the "No Fear " type of person.
Palms still slightly moist.

same cliff, different route. Honnold did not free solo the dawn wall, he free solo'd freerider on the other side of the nose. The dawn wall is a significantly harder route, which as superhuman as he is, alex honnold is not capable of free soloing.

I've climbed in the past, with the peak (pun intended) of my career leading a summit of Seneca Rocks, WV.  A few years back I went to Yosemite and make a point to climb the scree pile up to the Alcove, just so I could touch the face of El Cap.  What Honnold did is mind boggling.

Some pics from my trip.

I listened to Honnold's appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast.  He came across a lot like a lot of other sports prodigies we've seen.  Almost....nerdy.....about his craft.

And not thrill-seeking, per se.  More calculated than that.  He said the big free solo climbs are 4-5 times per year, for the cameras and the remainder of the year he's mostly climbing with ropes (99% of the time is what he said).

Very smart guy.  Very thoughtful.  Doesn't drink much, doesn't party much, doesn't chase girls like you'd expect.  He said the climbing itself is already taking a back seat to just traveling and seeing places.

Something else is going on with his head, and with his climbing in general.  I don't think we'll see him go while attempting something outrageous.  He might even live to be an old man.  We'll see.
