If you don't believe in God, the statement doesn't apply. The founders meant all men are created equal in God's eyes. That's why the following statement says "Endowed by our creator". If your an atheist or agnostic, it won't make sense to you. Move on to something else. It's a puzzle your trying to solve without the major piece.

The phrase in the Declaration of Independence that says "all men are created equal" means everyone has the same natural rights. A person born to a king has the same natural rights as a person born to a peasant. It doesn't mean everyone is born with the ability to run the same speed or do math with the same ability.

All men are created equal in that they should have equality under the law, equal rights, and equal access to opportunities.
All men; however, are not guaranteed equity when it comes to success, status, or income. They also have to deal with whatever problems or privileges they are born with. The left in this country don't accept this and look for ways to provide equity of outcome through affirmative action or socialism. If they had their way we would live in a Harrison Bergeron style dystopia. |
