I have a son who is about 5' 5" and almost 17 years old. He was on the small size when born. I'm 5' 9" and my wife is 5' 4".
Any ideas on how to help him grow taller? He has a good diet and sleeps like a normal teenager. |

Rub axle grease on the inside of his knees before he goes to bed.
Note: do not substitute Crisco for the axle grease because it is shortening... |

That is a drag, but he may have a good growth spirt or 2 in him.
I'm not a monster, but I don't take 6'2" for granted. Caffeine is said to put a damper on it, but genetics are genetics. |
|
Has he been evaluated by an endocrinologist? If not, talk with your family doctor about a referral and HGH supplements. Don't just start on the over-the-counter stuff, cause it might create a hormone imbalance and give him problems down the line. But realistically he might not grow much taller. I'm sure you are proud of him and love him just as he is. Make sure he knows that and help him see he can do anything even if he doesn't get taller.

He got your manlet genetics, nothing you can really do about it. Or get him on some HGH... Probably not the best idea but it will work as long as his growth plates are not fused yet.

He's 17, most of his growth is already done at this point. Once growth plates close, that's it, no more growing. Should have gotten him taller parents.

In for tips on how to grow taller.
Also in for tips on how to re-grow hair. |

I'm 5'8". My parents are 5"8". My cousins and uncle are over 6'. I didn't get any of that hight.
Sometimes that's all you get. |

Best of luck. Our son has had a super clean diet since birth, and he’s 5’7” at 12 years old. Tons of home-raised or hunted meat, lots of unprocessed vegetables, pretty low on processed carbs. If you’re already working that angle and he doesn’t have any sort of endocrine issues, he may just be short guy. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Tell him he has a really bright future as he'll fit everywhere. But he might need a stepladder...
At 6'3", I can tell you, being overly tall is not exactly easy either. I can hardly imagine how wonderful it would be to sit on a plane without my knees jammed into the seat in front of me, or to be comfortable in a smaller vehicle, etc. |

A family friend was always on the short side. Years later they found he had a brain cancer affecting his pituitary gland. The cancer was removed but it was too late to recover the growth.
Maybe a scan is in order, but it still may be too late at 17. |
|
Taller parents would have made a world of difference. You can't bear genetics.
Point him towards miniature golf instead of basketball. |

You gotta play the hand your dealt. I know a lot of short people. I don't like any of them but I know them.
Seriously, OP. Direct your energy towards making sure your son becomes a good man, no matter how tall. |

I had a friend many years ago who started just minor working out and het got 3 inches taller at age 19, strangest thing as I figured at that age you just would not grow taller but he did. I assume either it was due to increased hormones from the activity or late grow spurt.

I would suggest either vitamin b or a leg lengthen.
I hear the latter is extremely painful. |

My 14.5 y/o son is just 5' even right now, clearly shorter than his peer group, and shorter than his older brothers were at that age.
Took him to a pediatric endocrinologist for the proper work-up, turns out he has a growth hormone deficiency. So now he takes HGH injected daily, and another medication that prevents testosterone from converting to estrogen. This gives him the hormones he needs to grow to his maximum genetic potential, and prevents the bones from stopping their growth too soon, so he gets even longer to grow. He's about 1/2 to 2/3 through puberty, so we are cautiously optimistic he will get to 5-7 or maybe taller. We'll see. So the point of the story is that without the proper work-up, which includes bone age x-rays as well as blood tests for the hormones, all you are doing is guessing and hoping. Get him in to the pediatrician, and start the necessary referrals to a pediatric endocrinologist and get some real, actionable info. Might turn out that you missed the boat on the supplementation, but at least you will know what to reasonably expect going forward. |

You should have picked a taller woman.
Or have tall genes in the system. Both of my parents are 5'5". I am 6'2". Gramps was 6'4" and has to be where it came from. |

View Quote This is the answers. OP should have started that a few years ago as it is a slow process that takes time. His son needs to get on this treatment ASAP if he wants him to have any chance at being taller. You can also look getting him DHT gel to grow something else. |

Eat lots of food and pin lots of GH. I’m kidding. But I’m not. Preferably invent a time machine to begin doing the above a few years earlier than 17.

I'm sure your son is delightful OP, but as a general observation when I was young allotta the shorter/smaller kids acted like assholes to grow taller..

Hey there is hope.
I was about 5-7 and wrestled 138 my senior year of high school. After my freshman year of college I was 6-1 and 200. |

Teach him to accept himself as he is, and to be tough.
Martial arts lessons might be in order. |

The best nutrition you can provide + hormone-stimulating strength/endurance training (But not excessive)
People weren’t smaller 75 years ago because of genetics. It’s because they weren’t fed as well. If the kid isn’t fat, feed him more calories. |
|
Have taller genes?
If he's avoiding malnutrition related stunted growth, there's not much you can do. Some boys have late growth spurts. |
