The Egyptian "Book of the Dead" was a guide to get you through the steps involved in your being judged by the gods after you died. Everyone wanted a copy to be buried with them. If you were rich you got a complete version. If poor, you could not afford it. If middle class you got the most complete one you could. Since they were hand written they were not cheap. If you were Pharaoh you had it engraved on the wall of the room your sarcophagus was in. Finding a book of the dead in a tomb would be more expected than not. It is a book of prayers to help you through your journey to the afterlife more than anything else. |
