Rule #1

Its more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow.

But it's a helluva lot more fun to ride a fast bike fast, less tiring to ride a fast bike at touring speeds, and a lot less fun to wonder if your slow bike is gonna get you a Dodge Ram up your ass thanks to some texting idiot on the highway.

First bike was a 1986 VF500F Honda. 4 banger.

I learned to manage it in the peak power curve in the twisties and the city.  Tons of fun, but it took me a while to become comfortable with what it gave.  Rode with guys that would hit the twisties on a EX250 and could leave me and the big bore guys in the dust.

I would want bigger displacement for longer trips, but for commuting or a Saturday lunch sprint, they’re great.

I previously owned an EX250 and a GSXR750. My current only bike is a 996.

I'd love to have a Grom or RC390, too.

Even where they are, I've managed to somehow bust one, never found what hit it

Cool.  Thx for the info.

I just have folding mirrors on mine and that has worked out well enough so far.

( I'm riding an older TTR 225 that I converted to a dual sport with a Baja Designs kit, two sets of wheels, tires, chain, and a XT 225 sprocket. )

Way back in the day I rode with a guy who was a nationally ranked flattrack racer.
His favorite bike?
The GpZ 305.

Abos-fucking-loutly gutless, but it would trun on a dime and stopped pretty good too.
We rode in the SoCal canyons and in the tight stuff you could not catch him - going down hill.

The guy rode like an animal too.
If there was dirt on the road or a dirt shoulder he was in it or on it, sliding the rear end around.

A lot of times it's not the bike, it's the rider.

My Ninja 250 was pretty fun. It was fun being able to keep the throttle pinned in curves- but you pretty much had to keep the throttle pinned all the time.

My 1000RR, though, was a BLAST. Just insanely fun.

Yes, yes, and if you took three seconds to read the rest of the sentence before getting all sweaty in anticipation of being able to correct someone you would have seen my point: He drives a BRZ/FRS/86, which is pretty much the same experience as the small bikes he's asking about except with four wheels and a roof. And you know what you do with those things? You DRIVE them.

I specifically sought out my Ninja 300. I wanted to add a smaller streetbike, and the 300-class is perfect.

After getting it, I sold my SV650S, as it always got passed over in favor of the little Ninja. The Ninja feels like it weighs nothing, wants to have the crap revved out of it, and is just plain more fun.

As it is, I've consolidated down to two bikes now - the little 300, and a Super Tenere. The Ninja is for those occasions when I want to blast around on a sporty bike, the Tenere is for everything else.

The ninja 300 is great for screaming around town, really light and I can throw it around like it weighs nothing, fun to go WOT and shift through some gears without hitting triple digit speeds and it gets up to 120 mph  quick enough, got most of the performance mods, full exhaust and tune flashed ECM, love it.

There were also JDM I4 4-stroke 250s, but I don't know if they ever carried the 'Ninja' moniker. The other three of the Big Four also did the same. Screaming little 4-cylinders, with redlines up around 19k. Late eighties to mid nineties bikes. Those would be an absolute blast. If one of the Big Four were to resurrect the platform and offer it in the states, I would literally order one as soon as I could.

There were actually two CBR250RRs for sale at VMD this year; one sold during the day Saturday. Were from a group that privately imports JDM bikes.

Here's a turbo kit, and here's a big-bore kit to go with it. It's only a bit north of $3,000 for both if you go with a power commander and get injectors to run E85.

The ZXR250 is a badass little machine. It had an aluminum frame and USD forks while every 600 still had a steel frame and RWUs,also rolled on H spoke wheels a decade before they became cool. It's faster than the new 400 by way of a heap of revs and 2 more cylinders. The down side, and why such things are no longer in production,is that they were very expensive.

It's not as pretty as the NSR,TZR or RGV but Kawasaki's 250 was faster than all of them. One of these will beat the stuffing out of a  new 400.

Started out on a 1985 Honda Interceptor, good bike to learn on. In 2003 I bought a brand new GSXR 750 and rode that for 4 years. I had a Z1000 a few years ago just because it was a good deal but I much prefer fairings. I sold it due to my shoulder but if I ever buy another bike it won’t be smaller than a 1000.

I’d be cool if someone made a street legal 500cc two stroke

The smaller cc bikes like the 150cc class are popular in Asia where their tracks tend to be tighter and shorter, it's a lot of fun to go watch those guys absolutely flog those small bikes.  You can buy replica race bikes for under $3000 so they're pretty popular though not nearly so popular as the much more practical underbone bikes.  HONDA CBR150R Repsol

No not seen it. Don’t ride any more there was something about that bike it was crazy fast. Replaced it with a GSXr1000 but missed thrashing the 750 to keep up with the litre bikes. The thou was too easy to ride fast with the extra torque not as fun but I never liked 600s

750 is the sweet spot for me. Sold that bike to a mate for next to nothing because it didn’t want to see it go. He kept it for years when he sold it he warned the guy it was fast,,. He wrote it off on the way home :(

You can easily reel in scrubs on a 250 Single but it requires you to be at absolute boil doing stupid shit on inconsistent road surfaces + opposing traffic.

Every supermoto/smallbore guy wants to fantasize about chasing down 600-1000's in the twisty but in reality your just putting along behind them ZzzZzz

and if were talking 80% of the other roads aka flatistan strightsville any mouth breather can roll-on 100+ HP and blast the fairings off ya.

If you ride for your ego nothing will ever satisfy like a 1000cc

I agree with the anybody can go fast on a high output bike part, but in the second part of your post you’re comparing riders, not bikes.
I love singles and small bores and agree that they can be a hoot to ride, but some folks seem to think they are “just as good as” bigger bikes in the same scenarios.

A competent rider on a well set up 300,450 whatever will not hang with a rider of equal skill on a well sorted sport bike in the 600cc and up category.
Twisties, straights, whereever.

If you are hanging with a dude on a 1000cc sportbike, who knows how to ride, while you’re on your ninja 300 or 450 supermoto, it’s because he is letting you.

But many will continue to indulge in the fantasy

I would agree with that, skill being equal, the faster bike will be faster.  Although I have been on roads that seemed like they were designed like a supermoto track,  no sport bike was keeping up on those.
