There is a certain type of ugliness that arises purely from shitty design.  A well designed tool is beautiful in its own right.

This is why Hi-points are regarded as fugly.

Biggest problems with the original AR-180B was the non-chromed barrel and the tendency of the lower to crack if you slammed the upper closed in a certain way.   Plus that optics mount.

It seems like everything in this industry is currently dependent on price point.

There are better $1200-2000 rifles out there.  I won't buy a AR180 at that.

$700-800 and we can talk.

Price it to compete and it will sell.

This. Under 800 at actual sale(not MSRP) and there's a decent chance I'd buy one....PSA AR15 Kit + lower receiver kind of pricing...I'd have 3 or 4 in a year.

Aye, there's the rub.

No way they could move enough units to justify tooling up to manufacture them in the original manner at that price point.

Not really interested. It would be really cool to have one, I do like the design.

But, as a practical matter, I can get an AR-15 that will work as well or better than an AR-180 far cheaper than an AR-180 would cost to make. And the AR-15 has the advantage in availability of parts, especially in the future.

So, an AR-180 is not really a practical rifle. But, maybe I would want one as a collector or just because it's different? Yea, I do. But there's a whole laundry list of guns I want just to have and the AR-180, while nowhere near the bottom, is not anywhere near the top either.

What has not been discussed are mags:

Whatever design for the rifle is made a mag will be needed. PLEASE ARMALITE.............

Make a 20 round RETRO, dual cut, Armalite AR-18 branded mag.

Dual cut meaning AR-15 cut on one side and AR-180 cut on the other side. STRAIGHT not curved.

Floorplate with original logo and AR-18.

Sterling mags use this dual cut feature. They work in the AR-15 and the AR-180.

That way the mag will look great and function in any final design and the original design.

That's what this is really all about.  The only people who would buy one are collectors or folks who just want an AR-180 for whatever reason.   That's why I think any half-assed attempt like an AR-180 upper on an AR lower is not going to be a successful product.   If I can't get a rifle that at least strongly resembles the original, there's no point.

Would buy one closely resembling the original (non-Sterling) AR180 B. Priced $800 to $900 max. Saw one go for $1000 on GB like new with box.

I had a nice chat with Mark Westrom and Ben from Armalite at the SAR West show.

They were very enthusiastic about bringing back the AR180. I dropped a few hints about what I think the market would like to see.

Personally I want to see an AR180S but until then I will build my own.

My AR18S shown for extra internet points!

I have one of the originals, and its a decent weapon.  Has pluses and minuses, like anything else.

The mag thing is no big deal.  Reasonably easy to convert AR mags at home.  Alternatively, be super easy for a vendor to convert them if there was adequate demand.

What I think kinda sucks is the folding stock.  I'd rework that feature.  Completely.

Chrome lined barrel is not really a feature I seek out in any barrel.  I'd prefer stainless or a CHF steel.   With a modern twist rate.

The BHO is a failure point. Plenty of originals around without them. As is the weak ass stock hinge...my Sterling has a hairline crack and most I’ve come across do as well. And they flex badly.  I wouldn’t even consider it if it didn’t come with a chrome lined barrel.

yes i believe it is a very poorly run company.

to the point of wondering how they keep the doors open.

an ar-180 could put them in the game again.

their product and development staff should be fired. stagnant employees with no ideas showing up for a paycheck.

Gotta remember to buy one of spuds, receivers.
Mine is set up with the sormworks hinge and folds.

I'd buy another if they had a rail.
My MI mount was shit and so no optic mounted on mine.

It would be real simple to make a version that utilized AR barrels and hand guards.
Steel or Aluminum lower.
Ar mags.

How about an AR18?
That was 308 size right?

-$1000 or less otd

But it won't, and will flop for those reasons.
