A coastie LT commanding an 87 ft cutter was running the show?  Are you sure it wasn't the very senior USN Captain commanding G.W. Bush?

Did they give you a station to keep or were you just supposed to not get run over?

Yeah, no.

I think you may be technically correct. The only place pilots actually take official command of the vessel is in the Panama Canal.

Not that there isn't hell to pay if you don't listen to them and run aground.

No sub pens. They're usually parked at piers 22 and 23. You can take one of the tourist boat rides and snap all the pics you want from the Elizabeth River

No piers 22 and 23 anymore. They renumbered the piers 10-15 years ago. I was super pissed.

That's a big and badass ship. It is a little reassuring that we are still the only country on the planet that has the knowledge and capability of building such machines of war.

I would assume that that's public knowledge and even if it wasn't advertised, I'm 100% certain our enemies either already know or could easily find out.

It has to be experienced in person.

When boot SN FiveSpeedF150 was passing through Norfolk I figured I'd go check out a carrier just to see one in person. I was walking along the pier trying to figure out where the damn things were. Then... I looked up.

They're stupid big.

Yeah, stupid big until you are on one for 6 months at a time. At around 3 months out and no land, its about the smallest place on earth.  Many days at sea on board the USS America (CVA 66) with VAW-123.  Watched the Roosevelt blow us out of the water on her way to the Gulf. Now that was a wild ride.

Awesome!!  Always loved it when we announced over the net in the clear to other vessels who we wear and what we intended to do, "This is U.S. Warship one-two..."  The net would go quiet until we finished our business, much respect out in the world for our Navy!!!

The movement of the GWBG is no big secret, I know, wavy tv 10 and the other local news broadcast it loud and far. Taking pics of available assets isn't helping the cause though. Just sayin'

I spent 2003-2005 at CG Sta Little Creek, Driving the 47', 25' and 23' for lots of escorts in an out! Coolest was the new CVN Reagan, that thing cleared Cape Charles and laid the throttles down....and was GONE. Guess the escort was over.

You on an old CG 25' or similar? Looks very familiar :)

We are running a 29" Safeboat.  Just like the 25s, but a little bigger.    We have the front deck covered, unlike the open one on the CG 25s.  We don't have a mounted weapon like you guys!!

We took a NASBLA tactical boat operators course course with her last year.  She was the slowest boat on the water.  She got the nick-name "Blue Thunder".  We are in the process of re-powering her (twin 300s is the desire)

These are the only pics I could find....

Still feels weird to not have an "Enterprise" active in the fleet.  Hopefully that gets fixed someday soon.

I worked as a consultant at NNS for a short period of time.  I can say hitting my head on the bottom of the Ike while it was in drydock is probably something not a lot of people have experienced.  Going under a carrier set up on blocks was scary as shit the first time I did it.  SO scary that the first time had me back up on deck in a matter of minutes.  Took many deep breaths, knew if I don't go right back, I was done.  Went back down and I was comfortable although not without some fear.  Reps made it second nature and REALLY a MARVELOUS experience.

I was up in the Bush's bridge about a week ago. My buddies wife is a QM3 and he was a QM3 on it so I got the behind the scenes tour. My tug has also undocked it from Newport News shipyard when it was launched.

The island is Craney Island and its not even a real island. Thats where the dredges dump the spoil they suck up. It going to be a huge container ship terminal in 10 years.

I was going to ask about the container port being built there.  Isn't there supposed to be an initial operational capacity there in a couple of years?  I keep hearing that Norfolk is going to be ready to handle the new Post-Panama ships before the Port of New York/New Jersey and they're supposed to be operating in 2015.

The USN gets it right sometimes.  This is one time I'm glad they did.

The 'recycling' of the Enterprise will be a unique feat as it's the largest nuclear powered vessel to be scrapped to date. (It was the largest nuclear powered vessel in existence for many years, so this isn't surprising).

Carriers and submarines require a security zone to keep small vessels out of the way and give them free transit.  In addition, if there were hostile intentions by small craft, the size would make maneuvering in a channel dangerous and running aground is not an option.

In addition, large vessels would have difficulty putting rounds on fast moving boats in close.
