I feel for you OP. I'm sure the situation as a whole was a shitty situation to be in let alone to at the "BLM" side of it making it worse. Sadly, as well, you were 100% extorted. It came down to give the black man his deposit back even though he's 100% at fault or possibly something happens to you, your staff and/or business. I don't blame you for giving the $ back, but it does make you think about the policy itself now that you didn't enforce it.

I don't blame the OP at all, it's easy for people to second guess when they don't have a significant chunk of their own money, blood, sweat, and tears hanging in the balance over a piddling amount of money, principles or not.
I had something kinda like this happen some years back when I owned a restaurant, homeless black guy snatched all the money out of a tip jar on the counter and took off running with it. I chased him for about half a block before my brain really kicked in and started imaging what would happen when I caught up to him, me tackling him to the ground and beating on him till he coughed up the money, with a pistol on my hip, and how that would play if someone got it on video and the local news/social media ran it with "armed white business owner brutally beats homeless black man over $20", or something to that effect. I went back to the shop and made up the cash out of my own wallet, pissed me off to do it, but it was the smart play to protect my business in the situation, to say nothing of the potential dangers of fighting someone who may be infected with god knows what with unknown weapons in the mix over what amounted to chump change. Sucks, but the smart decision often doesn't feel very good. |
