Agreed. Favorite episode is a tossup between the second half of the pilot where they take out the 105s at Brecourt Manor (sp?) or Crossroads.

Both had pretty good firefights, but Crossroads in particular struck me. Going, literally, to the sound of the guns, and they're pulling everything they can off the dudes retreating: ammo, genades, probably other stuff too. That was a pretty powerful scene.

I was more talking the end of Crossroads, when they were going into Bastogne.

My favorite World War II show of any kind.

I drove past Toccoa and Mt. Currahee a couple of weeks ago with the family on vacation. I didn't realize it was on the way to our destination so I didn't plan for a stop but I plan on going back. I did see Mt. Currahee, though; it has a cell phone tower on it now.

Odd bit of trivia but they did not have a rifle range at Toccoa... they had to travel 30 miles to Clemson University to use theirs.

There is a museum and other memorials dedicated to the 506th PIR located there. I plan on going back when it warms up a little.

Just learned another bit of trivia. Apparently Captain Sobel wasn't as bad as the HBO mini-series made him out to be. He raised a family after the war and attempted suicide later in life by shooting himself in the temple. His wife divorced him some time after that. He lived the last 17 years of his life at a VA assisted care medical facility.

"Sobel returned to the United States after the war, and worked as an accountant before being recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He remained in the Army National Guard, eventually retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He later married, and had three children.

In the late 1960s, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol. The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited out the other side of his head. This severed his optic nerves and left him blind. He was later moved to a VA assisted living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. Sobel resided there for his last seventeen years until his death due to malnutrition on September 30, 1987. No services were held for Sobel after his death."

A few other pieces of trivia:

- Episode 3 follows Private Blithe (hysterical blindness guy), and states he died at the end. He didn't. Even Ambrose's book got that wrong, he survived, stayed in the army, fought in the Korean War, and died while on active duty as a Master Sergeant. with a Silver Star, 3 Bronze Stars, and 3 Purple Hearts on his record.

- The tv series makes the battalion commander, LtCol Strayer seem like an incompetent coward, where Winters gets the BN XO job to "help him." The book says it was because Strayer was unofficially acting as the Regimental XO and was actually pretty good.

- Part of my family lived in Nixon, New Jersey (now part of Edison), named after Lewis Nixon (father of Capt Nixon) who owned some factories on the Raritan River.

Another interesting tidbit is the discrepancy of Floyd Talbert's life after the war as described by Ambrose in his book which was disputed by the family:

According to his brother Bob in an online forum, Talbert attended Indiana University after returning from the war. He took a job with the Union Carbide (Haynes Stellite Division) in Kokomo, later transferring to Alexandria, Indiana. Later he worked as a farmer before joining General Tire and Rubber Company as plant manager. He married in Indiana, where he and his wife had a daughter.[12]

Talbert later worked as a car salesman in Indiana and California. He eventually settled in Redding, California for more of an outdoor life.

For years, Talbert avoided Easy Company reunions but attended one shortly before he died. But he did meet with some Easy Company comrades after the war. One night he went out on the town with Edward Tipper, whom he had believed must have been killed in Caranten, and had a great reunion with him.[13] Talbert also stood up for fellow Easy Company comrade LaVon Reese when he got married.[14]

Author Stephen Ambrose wrote about Easy Company in his book, Band of Brothers (1992). In following the lives of the men, he described Talbert in the postwar years as struggling to find a place for himself. He also wrote that Talbert became a drifter and alcoholic, and lived in his later years as a mountain man in California.

Talbert's family members were disturbed by this portrait and disagree with it, as they have expressed in forum postings online.[12] They acknowledge that he had difficulty with drinking for a period. But, his daughter has said that, prior to his death in 1982, her father "had managed the drinking problem very well and had his finances and his life in order when he died."[12]

His brother Max Talbert wrote in the same online forum:

...Tab's move to California was prompted by a diagnosis of a terminal disease and that Tab simply decided that he wanted to spend his remaining time outdoors.
