God speed boys.

I never want to pilot a fly-by-wire aircraft.  You are demoted from aircraft commander to committee member with a vote.  The computer gets a vote too.

Holy smokes, that's plush.

It has a curious looking rotor hub too.  Does not look like the typical metal forging (lots of them are titanium).

And not to make light of this, but there is an interesting photo or a very obscure a cool old time Bell design, in the background of the photo in the second post

Its a bell YFM-1 Airacuda.  It was a pre WWII design or a bomber destroyer.  The wing pods carried gunners for 37mm automatic cannons.  Wasn't fast enough.

Concerning the wind. That aircraft has been in the wind since it came out of the assembly building. We are in the panhandle. Maybe somethingin the composits, looking at that tailboom.

Maybe high speed rotor separation. They did say they were testing a new rotor system. High winds were reported during the day.

Or some kind of rotor flap / oscillation that broke or cut the tail off.

Official now: the pilots were Eric Boyce and Jason Grogan, both Marine reservists, husbands and fathers.

I worked with them both on an AH-1Z project a few years ago, and talked to Jason just a few weeks ago.  He was an FFL and an NFA collector.

God damnit.

Is that a fresh Bell design, or is it based on the AW189?

I worked with Jason on several helicopter projects (H1,  ARH, etc) and a couple of RPD builds too.

A terrible loss.

That wouldn't help with a high tension line.  Those cables are about an inch in diameter, and very strong.
