Poll is lame.
Yaphet Kotto Laurence Fishburne Idris Elba ETA: If they haven't done Shakespeare, they're not really accomplished actors. I can't quite see Samuel Jackson or Denzel Washington as Aaron or Othello. |

I would classify Denzel as one of the best actors of all time in general - black/white, male/female.

Tough call between Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. Second place is a deathmatch between Laurence Fishburne and Idris Elba |

Perry parlayed the Fetchit persona into a successful film career, becoming the first Black actor to earn $1 million. He was also the first Black actor to receive featured screen credit in a film.[4][5] Perry's film career slowed after 1939 and nearly stopped altogether after 1953. Around that time, Black Americans began to see his Stepin Fetchit persona as an embarrassing and harmful anachronism, echoing negative stereotypes. However, the Stepin Fetchit character has undergone a re-evaluation by some scholars in recent times, who view him as an embodiment of the trickster archetype.[6] |

Who can disappear into their character like Daniel Day-Lewis?

Honorary mention for Woody Strode. Great actor, and a trailblazer. Took some risks.
Sergeant Rutledge is a 1960 American Technicolor Western crime film directed by John Ford and starring Jeffrey Hunter, Constance Towers, Woody Strode and Billie Burke. Six decades later, the film continues to attract attention because it was one of the first mainstream films in the U.S. to treat racism frankly and to give a starring role to an African-American actor. The film starred Strode as Sergeant Rutledge, a black first sergeant in a colored regiment of the United States Cavalry. At a U.S. Army fort in the early 1880s, he is being tried by a court-martial for the rape and murder of a white girl as well as for the murder of the girl's father, who was the commanding officer of the fort. The story of these events is recounted through several flashbacks. Sergeant Rutledge - "It ain''t your father now... it''s you, & me" |

I'm not one to label people, so did not realize the rock was considered black.

THIS is phenomenal acting.

There are some really good actors listed in this thread. Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington have to be right up there. Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor are great. I'll throw another name into the ring: Djimon Hounsou. He was excellent in Amistad, Gladiator, and Blood Diamond.

The Rock isn't black. He's Polynesian or whatever they call Pacific Islanders these days.
I voted for Denzel and Will Smith. |
|
This poll is a fraud without listing the greatest Black actor of all time, James Earl Jones.

Voted Denzel, but poll fail for not including Idris. He'd be a close second.
Eta- And Freeman. Super poll fail. |

I love a good Denzel movie but that fucker is Denzel no matter what name his characters is. And don't even get me started about Samuel "motherfucker" Jackson. he couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag. |

Collateral Beauty Concussion Ali Seven Pounds Pursuit of Happyness Legend of bagger vance Six degrees of separation. Still not my vote, but he is a better actor than he gets credit for. Edit: he is certainly better than samuel l jackson. I might actually throw up Mos Def. Far better than people give him credit for too. Something God Made and 16 blocks both are great movies because of him. |

I don't think Denzel has ever made a bad movie. If he has, it's one I've not seen.

I think a "great actor" needs to be able to span both film and stage, so I'm going with James Earl Jones.
