I wonder how many people that say MG42 have ever carried ammo farther than their truck to the firing line.

I think it's an excellent design, I especially love the barrel change, but the rate of fire is a deal breaker for light infantry.

Disclaimer - the only belt feds I have practical experience with are the 60 and 249

MG42 is the best foreign made belt fed machine gun ever devised hands down.

Runner up would be the soviet PKM.

As far as America is concerned dropping the M60 was absolutely necessary as it was not reliable and finicky choosing the FN M249/240B was a smart move.

Id agree with you, but choose the updated version, MG3.

PKM’s are pretty sweet. Was hitting 10x12 plates
2 out of 3 times with 3 round burst at 300 yards while shooting one.

MG-42 probably couldn’t do that.

Uhh, yeah it can.  An mg42 on a German lafette 34 tripod is a work of art and unmatched to this day.

This.

Also I'd take an HK21 over a PKM and MG42 ant day of the week.

Have you seen the tripod? It's great... but heavy as hell.

Even so would you characterize the m249 as the best?
Would you do so in the face of it's parent the MINIMI?
Or it's sibling the MK46?

The MG3 can be slowed down considerably, and would be my choice.  Austria refined the design further, and its called the mg74.  850 rpm.  They have fielded it for nearly the last 50 years.

No, I already said the MAG or PKM is the best.

It's not as bad as people make it sound though. A blast to shoot off a tripod

Did they make the barrel heavier? The MG42 and derivatives have light barrels that heat up extremely quickly.

I would go with the MG42; though the PKM is a strong contender.

IMO, neither the Maxim nor the FN MAG count as foreign.

Hiram Maxim was American (he only became a British Subject later) even though he did the work there.

The FN MAG borrows, IMO, too much from the BAR. That's not to say it's an American invention - it's not - but it's the bastard love child of a BAR and an MG42. So I'd say it's an American-German gun born in Belgium. Too much American in it, IMO, to count.

PKM for sure.

Literally the only downside of the PKM was the non disintegrating link belt.  If it wasn't for that, it would be the perfect GPMG.

PKM.  Mobility is important.  Pounds matter.

I pkm WITH TRIPOD still weighs less than an m240b.  Good accuracy.  Excellent controllability.  Stupid reliable.  The belts are obsolete, but are a fair tradeoff for an otherwise excellent weapon.

Gotta keep you guys on your feet lol

Yep I have a 16"

Can't say it gets used a lot these days with the price of 762 commie. It's unique and I had a ton of fun with it. Semi does kind of defeat the true purpose of a belt fed. But still fun.

Maybe one of these days I'll yank the barrel and sbr it. I've always fancied the short modified ones

I vote for MG 42.  Although Maxim was definitely the standout early on.  PKM.  You can't argue with success.

But MG 42 has the look.  That's what takes it over the top for me.

I love the looks of the MG 42. Even though that thing killed a shit load of Americans it’s just a sexy fucking gun.

On the other hand the comment about the M 60 not being reliable is not accurate in my experience. I shot a ton of those over the years and found them to be nothing less than reliable.

No experience with any belt fed personally. The MG42/MG3 looks sweet and that high rate of fire is . The PKM seems to have a legendary reputation though.

If I'm carrying the gun and ammo, I'd prefer to have a smaller caliber LMG like the Stoner personally, although it's not really a "proven" design and isn't foreign. I'm a sucker for high tech "new" (it's actually been around a while) and cool stuff, but it needs to work. I don't think KAC would put out a bad gun though.
