I love Man on Fire.

That said, the ending should have been exactly the same - Denzel gets patted down and gets into the Kidnappers car.

Except, he's got the same Ass Bomb he used on the police chief, and in his final act he blows up the car with the kidnappers men inside.

It's great. It's a 90 minute toy commercial with the voices of Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack and Orson Wells.

And the soundtrack is entirely hair metal, synth pop, and Weird Al Yankovic!

Loved the ending of Four Rooms.

Edit: had to change the video, last one cut short. Also unfortunately, I can't find the entire scene on one video, the build up before this clip helped make the scene.

Simplified explanation

Since the Firstborns were satisfied, he is transformed into a “Starchild” — a Firstborn — the next evolutionary leap in mankind. The Starchild is not a physical entity. The Starchild, as shown on screen, is a cinematic representation of the consciousness of Dave Bowman. His consciousness was drawn into the TMA-2 monolith. Bowman is effectively reborn within the monolith and looks over mankind. The image of the Starchild symbolizes this rebirth. Much as the previous few minutes of the film symbolize the absorption and the initial communication with the beings that created the monoliths (Chenmunka).

And here’s Kubrick’s explanation of the ending:

In a timeless state, his life passes from middle age to senescence to death. He is reborn, an enhanced being, a star child, an angel, a superman, if you like, and returns to earth prepared for the next leap forward of man’s evolutionary destiny.

It’s an obtuse way to say that Kubrick was a hack who was trippin’ bawlz. I posted in another thread the other day that I would be interested in reading the actual novel that it’s based on as it seems like there actually is a good story there if it’s not shackled to the awful filmmaking.

The end of 2001 makes the similarly themed nutso evolved consciousness bit from fucking Evangelion look coherent.

Also always liked the ending to Blow Up big pretentious but I like it because it’s just so wtf. It has nothing to do with the movie at all. Play some mi e tennis and walk off. Just why?

The novel was written by Arthur C Clarke.  Clarke worked with Kubrick on the movie.  The novel was written after the movie.

The post you quoted is correct.  Bowman becomes a Star Child.  In later books, HAL does also.

Edit:  in the book, after Bowman enters the monolith near the end, he is propelled through the portal.  At one point, he passes over a vast plane of machines, small and large.  Those machines were used by the life forms in their evolution to the Star child form.  Biological, mechanical and then being able to exist as energy/Star child in space itself.

The monolith is a tool used by the life forms.  Think Swiss Army knife.  The ratio of the dimensions of the monoliths are 1x4x9.  Of course those continue in higher order of dimensions.
