AK? SKS? It's a ranch rifle, it doesn't need to be "the best". It just needs to put bullets at lethal velocity more or less where you aim it, atleast most of the time that you pull the trigger.

A Remington 760/7600 is pretty handy. You pick your caliber for expected critters.

We always had a single shot or pump shotgun in 12 or 20 nearby. Bird then buck if pump. Snakes were the usual target. Coyotes and wild dogs were also fair game.

For my area a lever in 357 magnum is a handy option. Abundance of wild hogs encourages me to want a bit more than a 22LR due to targets of opportunity.

Whatever is cheap at the pawn shop if it is going to be a ranch truck gun. Most of the guys I know have an old beat up AK for poping coyotes, coons, and such in their farm or ranch truck.

What kind of shit are you planning on shooting on your ranch? Are you going to be carrying it slung all the time or strapped to a 4wheeler and you'll go unstrap it when something needs shot?

I vote AK with a side folder and a 12" barrel. If its something you'll be carrying more often, then something lighter like a lever or bolt FUD gun.

I have both Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 in 30-30.

For a ‘ranch rifle,’ which to connotes hard duty and rough handling, I might choose the Marlin.

Beefier, and I feel like the action wouldn’t pick up as much grime. No hard data, just a feeling.

Plus, they’re cheaper. At least until lately…

I've thought about this stuff more than someone should that doesn't actually own a farm

. If I were often out in the middle of nowhere, with maybe a dog or two, I'd suck up the weight thing and have a durable autoloader shotgun with me. I mean, if it's just me, I want something that's gonna give me a fighting chance against anything on the continent, up to Bigfoot. Not lying.

Truck/wheeler

I keep an Auto 5 in the house for anything in that radius. I've carried sks/336/1022 for awhile. The intermediate thing is more what I've been searching for. Biggest varmint/nuisances are coyotes, badger, and the occasional mountain lion. The kids keep a lid on gophers with single shot 22s.

I'm just not a fan of ARs for carry use. I like shooting mine from the bench and a mini14/30 that is better than minute of barn is hard to come by. Starting to think about finding an older 700 or 70 in 243/223

I don’t have a ranch, but I take this x model .357 with me pretty much everywhere. I have some .357 ammo ready in case I were to ever need to thump something but it’s almost always loaded with .38 special, because they just kinda go “pop”, and it makes me giggle. All I’ve ever killed with it is rockchucks, I’ve missed several coyotes but they’ve all been long shots and on the run.

Depends on location, things needing to be dispatched.

With my small farmlet here in the overgrown hills of Appalachia, a 10-22 serves well for my issues. Only had to break out the 12g once, but that was for a large stray pitbull that tried to get my youngest daughter. If i had a wild hog issue, the AR would be front guard.

If i were living on the high plains scrub of WY, like my brother did for years, I figure a scoped AR would be much handier. On a clear day, you could literally see a mountain range that was 100 miles away. Rigged lighter, the better to keep it easy for carry. Maybe add a revolver on the belt, loaded with snake shot for rattlers.

I lived in the Texas hill counrty a while. A red dot AR would do well there. You could even kill those little deer with one. I saw a rancher chop down a doe he caught in his vegetable garden with his marlin 70. She ended up in the smoke house.
